10 Tips For Creating the Perfect Home Office

10 Tips For Creating the Perfect Home Office

These days, working from home is more commonplace than ever. Some people were fortunate to already have a home office set up before the arrival of the coronavirus and shelter in place restrictions. Others are finding themselves in a new world, navigating the challenges of working remotely without the perfect office space.

Whether you’re new to the work from home realm, or a seasoned pro, it’s important to consider the space in which you work. Even if you only work from home in a part-time capacity, having the right space organized and laid out properly can have a serious impact on your mood, effectiveness, and productivity.

Let’s take a look at some things to consider when choosing or designing your home office.

1.  Home office location

Think of this as choosing prime real estate. Location matters and the type of work you do helps determine which location is best. If you spend your remote work time doing conference calls and video meetings, you’ll want a space that’s removed from the rest of the household commotion or potential distractions. On the other hand, if your work from home involves meeting with clients, an office on the first floor near an entrance works best.

2.  Style and function

Home Office Design

Even though it’s meant for work, your home office doesn’t have to be mismatched with the rest of your house. If your style is country living, for example, a stark modern office will feel out of place. Instead, choose colors, furniture, and accessories that complement the other rooms in your home and still provide the function you want and need.

3.  Comfortable and purposeful furniture

Whether you spend two hours a day in your home office or eight, having comfortable and ergonomically friendly furniture will improve your mood and productivity.

4.  Thoughtful colors

The color scheme of your home office should add to, not detract from, your mood and the type of work you do. For example, if you’re a creative writer, softer, more relaxing colors may work better for keeping your creative juices flowing. On the other hand, if your work is high energy, brighter, more vibrant colors can help keep you energized throughout the day.

5.  Find the right view

You may not have a home that looks out over the beach or a mountain vista, but find a room or space that does have a view that inspires you. This will make your office more enjoyable to work in. If you simply don’t have a view, or the room with the view isn’t available for your office, create your own with wall décor.

6.  Accessorize to match your personality

The great thing about a home office is that it’s your You don’t have a company or your boss dictating how it should look. Use this to your advantage by choosing accessories, furniture, and colors that define and complement your personal style.

7.  Choose your organization wisely

Home Office Design

A well-organized home office will not only look more professional for those video meetings you have, it will also improve your productivity. Get creative with organization strategies – these can include vertical and horizontal storage, shelves, built-ins, cabinets, etc.

8.  Technology tips

The right technology can make or break your work from home experience. Choose your phone, computer, printer, and other technology carefully based on what you want and need to get the job done. Then, arrange it in a way that promotes easy workflow. Finally, keep it all neat by hiding or organizing unsightly cords.

9.  Lots of light

A bright, cheery office will keep you inspired and reduce eye strain and the chance for headaches. If natural light from a window isn’t available in your space, choose the right fixtures and bulbs to provide the light you need.

10.  Inspiration

Working for hours in any office can be tiresome. What will keep you inspired and cause you to put in the hours you need? Maybe it’s photographs of your family, or a favorite painting on the wall. You get to choose and even change it out from time to time.

Why and How to Hire a Remodeling Company

Why and How to Hire a Remodeling Company

When you first decide to do a remodeling project, whether big or small, there are two main questions you must ask yourself

  1. Will I do the work myself, or should I hire a remodeling company?
  2. If I hire a professional, how do I choose the right one?

The answers to both of these questions can have a significant impact on the ease with which the project is completed, and how pleased you are with the finished product.

Why hire a remodeling company?

While some people have the skills to do their own home remodeling, many do not. Even with the proper knowledge and abilities, however, there are still several advantages of hiring a remodeling company. Some of the most common are listed below:

  1. Fewer mistakes – Unless you do construction work on a regular basis, chances are high that you will make mistakes when installing flooring or cabinets, or completing any other remodeling task. This usually means wasted time and/or materials, translating into wasted money as well.
  2. Professional design – While you may have a few design ideas yourself, from Pinterest or what you’ve seen at someone else’s home, a professional remodeler will be able to help you pinpoint the right design for you, your budget, and how you use your space. It’s very disappointing to spend money on a remodeling project, only to find out that it should’ve been designed better in the first place.
  3. Less stress and faster completion – Unless you’re retired, you likely have to work every day, meaning that your available remodeling time is nights and weekends. Project completion can drag out simply because you don’t have enough hours in the day to do it all. A professional remodeling company has a crew that will be assigned to your project, making it easier to get the job done more quickly and during daytime hours when you’re at work. That way, you can come home and relax after a hard day’s work!
  4. Warranty – If you do your own remodeling, you’re on the hook for costs related to fixing anything that goes wrong down the road. In contrast, many contractors warranty their labor and materials for a specified time period after project completion.

How do I choose a remodeling company?

Once you’ve decided to let a professional do the job, the next most important step is to pick the right company. Unless you already have personal experience with one or have a recommendation from a friend, you will probably have to choose from local contractors whom you know nothing about. Here are some questions to ask a potential contractor to help you choose the right one:

  1. How long have you been in business? (You’re looking for experience so longer is better here!)
  2. Are you insured? (If not, run the other way! If so, ask for a certificate of insurance to be provided prior to the project’s start.)
  3. Will you get the needed permits and/or inspections for my job? (An experienced professional will know exactly what permits and inspections are required – you shouldn’t have to figure this out yourself.)
  4. How long will my project take? (Ask about how unexpected delays are handled and how the time frame will be affected by the number of crews working and other jobs that are scheduled.)
  5. What will my project cost and what are the payment terms? (You don’t want any surprises here. It’s also helpful to know how additions or changes to project scope are handled.)

The list above is by no means an exhaustive one, but it’s a good place to start. Other considerations include whether or not the company has design consultants on staff, has a portfolio of work completed that you can look at, and what kind of warranty is offered. The more questions you ask BEFORE you hire a remodeling company, the better the chance that you will be satisfied with the entire process and the finished product.

Design Trends in Bathroom Remodeling

Design Trends in Bathroom Remodeling

bathroom trendsDesign Guidance from Sea Pointe Design & Remodel’s Industry Experts

Design that allows for aging-in-place is more popular than ever. When we design baths to be more accessible, we look for opportunities to include a full bath on the first floor of a home, offer wider halls and doorways and specify non-slip flooring, shower seats and grab bars for the tub, water closet area and shower. We often present our clients looking to remain in their home for the extended future with an option of a large walk-in shower without a threshold. For many remodels, a larger shower area can be achieved if the tub is eliminated. Double vanities are among the most requested feature when we are designing a new bath along with storage capabilities, stone or engineered stone (quartz) vanity tops and private water closet compartments.

Bathrooms as Spas

Creating a spa-like retreat in a home is another dominate trend. System tubs that offer hydro therapy, aroma therapy and light therapy appear on a number of our clients’ wish lists. We can convert a bath into a wet room by offering steam and different therapies that promote wellness and a healthy lifestyle.

Bathtubs, Vanities, and Lighting

Freestanding tubs that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes continue to trend high. Many of our clients come to the showroom wanting to incorporate bolder colors in their fixture finishes such as bronze and black. For whole home projects, our clients are attracted to consistency of imagery among baths that feature similar products and approaches in powder rooms and secondary baths that are used for the master suite.

In baths where space is a premium, we will suggest installing vanity mirrors that reach to the ceiling, specifying pendant lighting instead of the commonly used light bars, recommending wall-mounted vanities and toilets with lighting underneath, and using the same tile on walls as the floor. All of these design elements help to make a bath, whether it is the master, powder room or secondary bath, appear larger.

If you have bathrooms in your home that are in need of a makeover or if you would like to create a spa-like haven that promotes health and well-being, schedule an in-home first appointment with a member of the Sea Pointe Design & Remodel design team, today!

Your Master Bathroom Remodel ROI

Your Master Bathroom Remodel ROI

bathroom remodelMost Orange County homeowners decide to renovate their bathroom because their current bath no longer meets their needs, and life is too short not to live in a space that makes you smile every time you use it. If you are considering a remodel for a bath that is either functionally or aesthetically underwhelming, there are compelling reasons to make a change.

The Return on Investment You Can Expect

Updated bathrooms increase the value of your home. The kitchen and master bath are the two most important rooms in your house, not only for enjoyment but also for creating value. A renovated bath not only improves your quality of life, but it also increases the resale value of your home and makes your home more attractive and easier to sell.

New technology, advances in product design and showroom expertise exist to help you create the in-home spa of your dreams. Your personal retreat may include a steam shower with music, light and aroma therapies. Perhaps you’d like heated floors and towel warmers that help you and your family stay warm and toasty following a bath or shower. A free-standing tub is a sculptural work of art and could serve as a beautiful focal point of your space.

If done right, bath renovation can provide a high return on investment. Our showroom professionals know the fixtures that withstand the test of time for their appearance, performance and functionality. It’s a win to you to redo a shower and install a high-efficiency shower head with spray options ranging from a gentle mist to rain forest. This is  complemented by a thermostatic valve that allows you to specify the exact water temperature to wash away the stresses of the day, recharge your batteries, and relax tired muscles. These improvements can hold their value for decades.

Aging in Place

Increasingly, a large percentage of our clients are opting to stay in their homes longer and upgrade to allow themselves and their family members to age in place gracefully and with dignity. Bathroom renovations provide the perfect opportunity to install curbless showers, decorative grab bars, lower countertops and an overall footprint that improves the functionality and flow of the bath now and for the future.

Recent surveys from plumbing manufacturers find that Americans are spending more time in the bath. When you think about it, the bath is the place where you and your family start and end the day. How much more enjoyable would your mornings and evenings become if you had a vanity mirror that adjusted light levels to help ensure that you look your best regardless of the time of day?

There are multiple reasons to remodel your bath. If your bathrooms no longer serve your functional, lifestyle or aesthetic needs, give the Sea Pointe Design & Remodel Design/Build professionals a call at (949) 861-3400 or visit our design showroom at 576 Wald, Irvine CA 92618.

Pros and Cons for Open Shelves in the Kitchen

Pros and Cons for Open Shelves in the Kitchen

open kitchen shelvingOpen shelving has become an increasingly popular kitchen design feature among our clients because it provides a combination of an aesthetic focal point with superb functionality. Open shelves offer a look with universal appeal. They enable homeowners to showcase a dramatic back splash, display dishes, pottery, sculptures, plants, herbs, and dishware and glassware, among numerous other options. Plus, open shelves provide home chefs with the functionality to access their favorite cooking tools within arm’s reach. So, what’s the downside? Open shelves limit storage and can contribute to a cluttered look and feel.

Open Shelving Works When …

  1. Items that a homeowner wants to showcase are uniform in size.
  2. Homeowners want to easily access the cooking tools that they use most often without having to search in a cabinet or drawer. At a glance, homeowners know where everything is and know exactly what’s ready for use. Seeing all of your pieces encourages you to use more of your china and serving dishes because they’re never out of sight nor out of mind.
  3. Homeowners don’t want to display kitchen gadgets and tools and products that can be relegated to cabinets and drawers.
  4. Budgets are tight. Shelving tends to be less expensive than cabinetry and less costly to install.
  5. You want to showcase a back splash, collectibles, artwork and dish and glassware.
  6. Space is at a premium. Open shelves can make a kitchen appear larger and more open.

Open Shelving Does Not Work When…

  1. You don’t have the time or the inclination to keep the shelves organized.
  2. You don’t have the time or the inclination to clean often. Open shelves tend to attract dust and grease and grime generated from cooking.
  3. You are seeking custom design on a budget. For custom kitchens, the cost savings are negligible, especially if the client wants custom shelving.
  4. Functionality is more important than aesthetics. A primary benefit of open shelves is to have the most used kitchen items at your fingertips. It takes time and effort to keep everything in its place to avoid a cluttered aesthetic.
  5. There are too many items on the shelves that contribute to a cluttered, disorganized look.
  6. When you need the storage space that cabinets provide. Upper cabinets conceal clutter and disorganized dishes that you may not have time to straighten up. Upper cabinets help keep things tucked away and off the countertops.

Not sure? There are many cases when you can combine cabinets with open shelves. Are open shelves a feature that will work in your new kitchen? Give us a call at (949) 861-3400, or visit our design showroom in Irvine, to determine how you can create the kitchen of your dreams.
