Easy Care for High Maintenance Surfaces

Hardwood

Problem: Dirt can dull flooring and make it difficult to reseal

Try This:  Sweep frequently.  For regular cleanings, wrap a damp rag around a push broom and plow away grim.  On tough messes, try a wood-safe cleaner. Apply a coat of polyurethane as soon as the floor shows wear.

Skip That: Ditch silicone or acrylic-wax polishers and conditioners, which can leave a buildup that prevents polyurethane from adhering to the wood.

Granite

Problem: Though hard and durable, it can become stained, by oil in particular.

Try This:  Clean granite with warm or diluted dish soap, and dry immediately to prevent watermarks.  If oil seeps in, try a nontoxic degreaser, like Simple Green.Coat annually with a water-based sealant.

Skip That: As with marble, acidic cleaners can eat away at granite, so don’t use them.

Stainless Steel

Problem: Aggressive cleaning, especially of fingerprints, can lead to scratches.

Try This: Remove fingerprints without streaking by rubbing in the direction of the grain with a soft cloth dipped in undiluted white vinegar; buff with a dry cloth.

Skip That: Avoid chlorine, like bleach as they can cause corrosion.  Also steer clear of harsh abrasives, which is a recipe for scratches.

Marble

Problem: This veined stone is easily scuffed, scratched and stained if not properly treated.

Try This:  Apply a nontoxic water-based sealer every six months to protect from frequently used counter tops.  Use a mild detergent to general cleaning, then target deeper stains with hydrogen peroxide.  Try ultra fine steel wool to buff away small scratches for scruffs.

Skip That: Never use anything acidic (even seemly harmless vinegar) to clean marble; it can dissolve and etch the stone’s top layer.

Investing In Your Home Remodel

Investing In Your Home Remodel

When embarking on your ultimate remodel, your first step should be to establish a budget.  There are two parts to creating an effective budget: What do you want to invest versus what can you invest?

You probably have an idea of what you would like to spend on your remodel, but you also need to know what you are capable of spending.  Remodeling is a you-get-what-you-pay-for industry and a good designer should tell you when it’s worth it to spend the extra cash. It’s important to have a budget that you ideally would like to stick to, but know what your absolute maximum is too, so you can make a few upgrades if you want to.  You’re not going to remodel many times in your life, so do it right the first time.

Needs versus Wants

Be upfront with your designer and tell them what you’re looking to get out of your remodel.  Are you just trying to spruce things up?  Are you dying for more counter space?  If you give your designer a list of needs and wants, they will try to incorporate as many as possible within the budget you have given them.

Communication is Key

Many homeowners shy away from telling their designers what their true budget is -Don’t!  As a design/build firm, our responsibility is to keep you within your budget.  When clients aren’t upfront about their budget, time is wasted over-designing or trying to cut back wherever possible, when maybe that’s not what you’re really looking for.  On the other hand, your designer should be open with you about any and all additional costs that may come up along the way.  If you begin adding items to your wish list, your designer should remind you that these items may be pushing your budget farther than you were originally comfortable.  Make sure you have an open, honest relationship with your designer and your remodel will run much smoother.

Larger Scope = Larger Budget

The scope of your project will determine your budget.  If you’re considering an addition, or removing an interior wall to create a great room, remember that you will have architects and engineers involved in your project.  If you are just looking to remove and replace your cabinets, you can easily keep costs down, but if you are looking to move appliances, other costs will have to be factored in.  Again, if you are going to go through the remodel process which includes dust, and let’s be honest, some stress, then do it the way you want it.

A Kitchen Remodel The Whole Family Will Love

Open floor plans have gained popularity over the last few years, which typically open the family room and kitchen to one another creating a great room. An open floor plan allows a family to spend quality time together, without infringing on each other’s personal space and activities. Below we answer common questions that come our way.

What do you need to think about when designing an open plan kitchen?
You have to consider all the activities that will take place in the room, and how they can work together. Preparing meals, watching television, surfing the internet, doing homework, paying the bills, relaxing with a magazine and chatting with friends you have to make sure these can all happily co-exist in your open plan kitchen.
To cater for all these different needs, it’s always best to work with an experienced designer that can customize your space. An experienced kitchen designer’s job is to help homeowners maximize space and functionality of a room and ensure there is a seamless feel between all parts.

What are the practical considerations?
Many of our clients love to entertain, but it doesn’t always mean they need huge double ovens taking up tons of wall space and storage. Consider using a range with a small side oven to replace your second large oven. Another option is to go with a convection microwave that can be used as a microwave for the day-to-day cooking and switched to an oven when you have a few extra guests.

Do you have any recommendations for colors?
It’s important to think about the overall theme of the room. Usually it makes sense to match the kitchen style to existing furniture in order to cut costs.
Simple, light paint tones are often used in open plan kitchens as they enhance the proportions of the room: darker colors or more detailed wall papers would detract from the overall feel and ambiance of the new space.

If you have a large enough space, you can add seating on the end of your island. It creates a great space to do homework, pay bills and socialize with the chef of the house. From a design perspective, you can get creative and pick a different color for the island than the rest of the cabinetry, or select a fun countertop material that is different than the rest of the kitchen.
