5 Tips For Keeping Remodeling Costs Within Budget

5 Tips For Keeping Remodeling Costs Within Budget

Remodeling costsRemodeling costs are a huge factor when deciding if you should remodel or not. Whether you’re aiming to remodel just one room, or undergo a whole house remodel, home renovations can be very exciting. They can also be very costly. Sometimes, additional costs are incurred throughout the process because the scope of the project changes. Other times, added expenses happen due to lack of planning, poor construction techniques, or simply unexpected hurdles to cross. Let’s take a look at how you can keep your remodeling project within your budget.

Factors that affect remodeling costs

The first step to staying within your renovation budget is learning the factors that affect the overall cost. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Floorplan layout – The more the configuration of room changes with a remodel, the greater the expense will be. Work closely with your remodeling professional to determine whether the added cost of moving walls, appliances, etc. will be worth it in the long run.
  • Relocating plumbing and electrical – Even if the overall floorplan stays the same, moving appliances or fixtures that use electricity and/or plumbing may mean having to relocate electrical entrances, water pipes, and gas lines. All of this adds extra expense to the overall project.
  • Flooring materials – Replacing or re-doing a floor is often an integral part of a room remodel. The type of materials used, however, can greatly influence the cost. For example, tile flooring typically requires more labor and more expensive materials to install than vinyl flooring or carpet.
  • Custom features or materials – One of the fun aspects of remodeling is creating something that you’ve never had before, and something that’s different than anyone else’s. Custom-built cabinets or other features will give you a one-of-a-kind design, but they will also add cost.
  • Quality of construction and design – Sometimes, homeowners try to save money during the remodeling process by doing the project, or parts of it, themselves. While this may be okay for some handy do-it-yourselfers, it’s not advised for most. Lack of planning can end up costing you more than it would’ve to hire a professional if work has to be re-done, re-configured, or replaced.

Seamless Smart Home Technology

Seamless Smart Home Technology

From lighting to total home automation, Sea Pointe Design & Remodel team of industry experts break down your options for smart home technology.

Heating and Lighting Smart Home Technolgy

Smart Home Technology

Smart home technology can be intimidating but products like Nest thermostats and Phillipos Hue systems are reasonably priced, easy to set up and even easier to control. These products are allowing for customized lighting and climate settings for particular times of day, vacation modes and energy efficiencies that bring simplicity to your home. Moreover, various products offered by Abode Smart Systems incorporate geo-sensing technology, which lets the home automation system know if the homeowner is in the house or away. If the homeowner leaves and goes outside the “fenced” area, automatic adjustments are made to lighting, temperature and door locks.

Bathroom Amenities

Advancement in plumbing fixtures has enabled companies like Kohler to introduce the Moxie which integrates a Bluetooth speaker into the showerhead. Delta Faucets showcased its H2Okinetic showerhead at this year’s Kitchen and Bath Industry Show featuring LED lights that automatically turn on when water is running and turn off when water flow stops. Kohler also showcased its mood settings, allowing homeowners to ask Alexa to create their “nighttime routine” triggering the bath to fill to the right height, the right temperature and the lights in the bathroom to dim.

Appliances

Long known brand name, Jenn-Air, is making their presence known with the Control Wall Oven series. Utilizing Alexa’s technology, you can say “Alexa, set upper oven temperature to 350 degrees.” You can even download the Jenn-Air app and control your ovens from anywhere allowing you to turn the oven on while at the grocery store picking up groceries for tonight’s main course.

Manufacturers like BlueStar and True offer retro-inspired and modern ranges, refrigerators, and dishwashers in a painter’s palette of colors and textures. For something subtle, custom colored or polished metal knobs and trim adds a unique touch. Whether you’re going fully custom or you’re selecting from curated color collections, vibrant appliances are a great way to break up the monotone kitchens we’re all too familiar with.

Spicing Up Your Secondary Spaces

Spicing Up Your Secondary Spaces

Guest Bathroom Remodeling

When it comes to remodeling, kitchens, master bathrooms, and family rooms get all the attention! There’s no denying the functional and visual impact of a kitchen or master bathroom remodel. However, should either one come at the expense of a perfect powder bathroom? The Sea Pointe Design & Remodel team believes that spaces, both big and small, deserve the same attention to detail. Straight from our industry experts, here is how to add that wow-factor to your overlooked and under-designed small spaces.

Guest Bathroom Remodeling

Unlike a master bathroom, most guest bathroom remodels call for minimal cabinetry, fewer tiles, and less surface material. In other words, stylish guest bathroom remodels are much more manageable than you may think! The Sea Pointe Design & Remodel design team starts with statement cabinetry for an eye-catching, vibrant vanity. Such a commanding design element builds character without the need for expensive, luxury tile. In place of a shower curtain or a half-glass half-tile pony wall, frameless shower doors create the illusion of space. This imparts a huge impact on the charm of a small guest bathroom. As a finishing touch, beautiful plumbing fixtures add a sense of professional design.

Laundry Room Design

laundry room with barn door and cabinet storageTraditionally tucked away in a drab, unfrequented area of the home, laundry rooms are in serious need of design attention. Luckily for homeowners, laundry room updates don’t typically make a huge impact on the budget. Incorporating custom cabinetry for specific storage needs keeps miscellaneous laundry items off surfaces and adds organization. A countertop, however small, makes for a great folding or sorting station. Rounding out the room with a specialty design feature such as a sliding barn door or a phenomenal backsplash adds extra style.

“No one enjoys doing laundry, but there is no reason why that works space can’t be a beautiful one!”  Natalie Carr, Design Consultant

Powder Bathroom Remodel

deco style tile in hall bathroom shower and accent wallA daring tile selection brings life into even the smallest of powder bathrooms, creating a unique space that truly stands out. It is the perfect place for that fancy or whimsical tile you’ve had your eye on! Helping make sense of the endless tile options is Sea Pointe Design & Remodel design consultant, Aaron Golden. “Flipping through thousands of tiles drains every drop of excitement from the design process. I prefer to preselect a series of tiles based on color tones, textures, patterns and finishes, from which my clients can mix and match their favorites.”

Sophisticated, Functional Whole Home Remodel

Sophisticated, Functional Whole Home Remodel

Here is an inside look at a whole home remodel project that totally transformed this San Clemente house into a home suitable for family, friends and more!

Personalized Design

San Clemente Whole House RemodelingThe dynamic pairing of white painted perimeter cabinets with wood stained “Smokey Hills” island sets a sophisticated design baseline. Durable enough to withstand the countless family gatherings and dinner parties ahead. Leathered, Super White Quartzite countertops tie the two-toned kitchen cabinetry together perfectly.

Our clients specifically requested cabinetry to store the family’s Kitchen Aid mixer and cookware. They also wanted custom cabinet inserts to house the children’s snacks and organize the notorious “junk drawer”. These features serve to keep things beautiful behind the scenes. Integrating a full-size wine refrigerator into the cabinet plan was at the top of our client’s remodeling list. Wanting to add a playful element, a neutral arabesque shaped backsplash rounds out the space.

“Thoughtful design solutions, purposefully incorporated to reflect a homeowner’s lifestyle is what takes a remodel from good to great.” Carolyn Hall, Design Consultant

Family Friendly Floor Plan

San Clemente Whole House RemodelingWith a baby on the way and a love for entertaining, this San Clemente couple dreamt of a sophisticated yet comforting family-friendly space. Focusing first on the main living spaces, our clients opted to relocate the staircase that once separated the kitchen from the family room, creating a free-flowing floor plan. Second to the structural staircase relocation, widening the doorway between the family room and formal dining room furthers the open air feeling throughout the first floor. As the focal point of the room, this home’s original mantle and newly design built-in storage adds character, visual interest and texture to the fireplace facade.

Maximized Master

San Clemente Whole House RemodelThe master bathroom remodeling plan was developed to include a large double vanity, gorgeous freestanding tub, and luxury, spa-like shower. With limited secondary storage, optimizing the bathroom vanity was critical. Determined to offer the next level storage solutions, every drawer and cabinet was designed for a specific purpose. Outfitted with custom cosmetic organizers, electrical outlets and styling station inserts, everything has its place within this stunning master bathroom.
