How to Keep Your Pets Safe During a Remodel

How to Keep Your Pets Safe During a Remodel

Keep-pet-safe-during-remodel

Planning a home renovation takes time and work, there’s no doubt about that. It also takes thought about where and how your family will function when walls are torn down, appliances are being moved, and there are builders, painters, or plumbers moving about freely. While you’re making plans for the people in your family, don’t forget about your pets!

If you have a cantankerous canine, for example, think about how he or she will react when there are strangers coming and going every day. Or, perhaps your fluffy feline likes to sleep away the day on the couch – but that’s right in the middle of the room you’re renovating. Advance planning can keep your pets safe during a remodel, prevent them from getting injured or being unhappy, and give you less to worry about when demo day comes.

6 Factors to Consider to Keep Your Pets Safe During a Remodel

While you’re still in the planning stage for your home renovation project, here are some important things to consider:

1.  Where in your home will your pet be able to go to stay safe and out of the way?

From painters and electricians to plumbers and master builders, you’re about to have a variety of new people going in and out of your home every day. And, depending on the size and scope of your remodel, this could go on for days, weeks, or even months.

Just like you may look forward to retiring to your bedroom or spa-like bathroom at the end of a hard day, your pet will need someplace to go to get away from it all. Ideally, find a place where you can close the door to give your pet some privacy but also a welcome reprieve from the increased noise that home remodels often bring. A safe haven will keep them from becoming overstimulated and also keep them out of the way of the contractors doing the job.

2.  How will the renovation schedule affect your pet?

Obviously, there will be some days during the renovation that will be louder or dustier than others. There will be days that materials or appliances arrive when there will be a significant amount of traffic in and out of the house. And, there may even be days when your backyard gets transformed into a makeshift workshop where contractors can measure and cut trim, countertop, or other materials.

If you have an indoor/outdoor pet, these are all important factors to consider. If your dog normally spends the afternoon inside your enclosed backyard, for example, this won’t be a good fit for days when that space is utilized or heavily trafficked by contractors. To keep your pets safe during the remodel, you could consider taking them to the neighbor’s or a friend’s house on certain days.

3.  Are there chemicals or noises that could harm your pet?

Let’s face it – home remodeling is not a quiet job. From drills and hammers to nail guns and saws, there are plenty of tools used that create a good deal of noise. While you may escape the noise because you’re at work and the contractors can use hearing protection, your pet doesn’t have a defense against noise. In addition to finding a safe haven for your pet, consider whether or not you actually need to remove him or her from the property on especially noisy days.

Home renovation projects can also involve the use of several different chemicals, including paint and stain, just to name a few. Will the fumes from these chemicals be bothersome to your pet? Or, will construction dust be a problem? It is for some animals, such as birds, so take this into consideration when you think about where your pet will be during the remodel.

4.  Is there a way you can keep your pet’s routine consistent during the remodel?

Most pets are just like people – they’re creatures of habit! Just like you may enjoy sipping on a freshly brewed cup of coffee to start each morning, your pet probably has a special routine, too.

Whenever possible, try to keep that routine the same, even while the house is being torn apart and there are other people around. If your dog is accustomed to eating first thing in the morning and then going for a walk, for example, keep it going! The more things you can keep consistent, the less the differences, such as more noise and people, will affect your pet.

5.  What needs to be picked up in order to keep your pets safe during a remodel?

When the work crew is gone for the day, it may not be necessary to keep your pet locked up in their safe room. However, it doesn’t hurt to take a quick walk through the house to make sure there isn’t some leftover debris that could harm your pet. Things like nails, screws, or other sharp objects could easily have dropped to the floor but would be harmful if swallowed.

6.  Is boarding your pet an option you need to take seriously?

Obviously, most pets are happiest when they can stay at home around the people they love. Some renovation projects, such as a whole house remodel, for example, simply may not be conducive to everyone staying home while the renovation takes place. To keep your pets safe during a remodel, you may need to consider boarding them or having friends or family keep them at their place for a short time.

10 Small Kitchen Remodels with Big Design Impact

10 Small Kitchen Remodels with Big Design Impact

small kitchen remodels - Kitchen-island-with-dining-bar-seating-for-family-dinners-in-remodelAs the old saying goes, “good things come in small packages.” While this could pertain to many things, small kitchen remodels are certainly true. While they may be small in size, they can be full of good things that impact how the space looks and functions – stylish design features, custom storage solutions, and top-quality materials, just to name a few.

Key Features That Make Small Kitchen Remodels Stand Out

To help you visualize exactly what we mean, let’s take a look at 10 of our favorite small kitchen remodels that have a small footprint but are big on design.

#1: Coastal Glam Kitchen Makeover in Tustin

This Tustin kitchen remodel features a peninsula instead of a kitchen island. In keeping with smart design techniques for small kitchen remodels, the peninsula is multi-functional and serves three unique purposes:

  1. It provides additional cabinet storage since wall storage space is limited in this kitchen.
  2. The peninsula provides the perfect home for a built-in range. Someone preparing a meal at the cook-top can easily converse with others in the adjacent room while simultaneously having the necessary countertop space for meal prep.
  3. There is enough space on one side of the peninsula for informal countertop seating for three.

It’s also important to note the design elements that give this small kitchen a stylish flair – a stunning Mother of Pearl tile backsplash, a waterfall quartz countertop, cabinets with glass doors, and floating shelves are all eye-catching features!

#2: Sleek Kitchen Design in San Juan Capistrano Remodel

This San Juan Capistrano kitchen features a sizable island that fulfills a similar purpose to the Tustin kitchen’s peninsula. The island provides storage on one side and bar seating on the other while simultaneously creating a visual boundary between the kitchen and adjacent room. And, even though this kitchen is predominantly white and gray, its porcelain mosaic tile backsplash provides plenty of visual intrigue while also tying together the room’s color scheme.

#3: Modern Farmhouse Small Kitchen Remodels in Laguna Niguel

This bright and cheery farmhouse kitchen is positive proof that even small kitchen remodels can be fully loaded with functional beauty. Even though it only measures 145 square feet, every bit of this kitchen is fully optimized in order to provide the homeowners with the most storage and workspace possible without sacrificing style.

A built-in pantry and corner cupboard with floating shelves above it make transitions between the kitchen and adjacent rooms seamless. Across the room, an expansive peninsula countertop provides bar seating and contributes to the kitchen’s inclusive feel. An under-the-counter beverage center offers a special place to keep drinks cool that’s also easy to reach. And, last but not least, note the two-toned cabinets beautifully tied together with a multi-colored mosaic marble tile backsplash.

#4: Gorgeous & Functional Kitchen Remodel in Newport Beach

This small kitchen remodel in Newport Beach is a perfect example of functional beauty. The stylish look comes primarily from gorgeous white cabinets contrasted by a marble mosaic tile backsplash and veined quartz countertops.

But, perhaps the hidden beauty of this kitchen lies in its abundant customized storage options. From slide-out drawers and organizational cubbies to a Lazy Susan with a double-jointed door, the cabinets in this kitchen provide a host of ways to tuck everything neatly out of sight but have it readily available and within reach when needed.

#5: Charming Kitchen Remodel in Laguna Niguel

For some small kitchen remodels, the existing space isn’t well suited for either an island or a peninsula, and that’s okay. What’s most important in these cases is to maximize the use of the space and also include unique design elements that fit the homeowner’s style and personality

In this Laguna Niguel kitchen remodel, modern meets vintage with a mix of both new and retro-inspired design features. Built-in cabinets, a corner sink, and smaller appliances all work together to create a small but charming space that’s exciting but functional.

#6: Seaside Laguna Beach Kitchen Remodel

Small kitchen remodels don’t feel so tiny when walls can be removed, allowing the room to open up into adjacent spaces like in this Laguna Beach kitchen renovation. Even though the kitchen itself is only 125 square feet, it feels much larger due to its new open-concept layout.

The room is also fully optimized to make functional use of the existing space. Take the kitchen island, for example. It houses a sink and dishwasher, provides additional cabinet storage, and is also large enough to offer bar seating for three. Add that to the glossy blue porcelain backsplash, white cabinetry throughout, and wood-like luxury vinyl flooring and you have a functional, beach-themed kitchen that completely fits with its coastal location!

#7: Beautiful Two-Toned Kitchen Remodel in San Clemente

Family dining is absolutely possible, even in small kitchen remodels, as long as this is taken into consideration during the design phase. In this San Clemente kitchen remodel, for example, we made sure to include a large peninsula for this very purpose. The countertop is expansive, allowing plenty of room for dining without encroaching on space needed for food preparation.

Reducing clutter and keeping items off the countertops is one way that small kitchens can look and function at their best. For this remodel, that included a custom-built hutch that houses decorative items for display but also hides small kitchen appliances behind garage-style cabinet doors.

#8: Newport Beach Classic Kitchen Remodel

One of the easiest ways to make a small kitchen look stunning is with a stylish tile design. This Newport Beach kitchen is a perfect example of that. While white cabinets and countertops make the room bright and cheery, a unique patterned tile backsplash is an eye-catching feature that elevates the entire design.

#9: Ladera Ranch Open Kitchen Remodel

This kitchen remodel in Ladera Ranch is a great example of what’s possible when you combine contrasting colors and materials. White wall cabinets really pop when set against a dark glass subway tile backsplash and dark porcelain flooring made to look like wood. The dark/light contrast continues with an island that has a dark lower half and white quartz countertop.

This kitchen also features something that isn’t always possible in every small kitchen remodel – a bar area with wine glasses and bottle storage rack. Since the kitchen was renovated to allow for a better traffic flow throughout, this space became suitable for this fun and useful feature.

#10: Capistrano Beach Small Kitchen Remodels

Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, our goal is to make every kitchen remodel fit the unique style and personality of the homeowners but also fit well with where it’s located. This Capistrano Beach kitchen remodel makes good use of the ocean view but also brings the feel of the sea inside with a beachy theme. Luxury vinyl flooring, stone countertops, and a tile backsplash made of marble and limestone all come together to create an oceanside vibe.

5 Ways to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel (But Still Get a Beautiful Kitchen!)

5 Ways to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel (But Still Get a Beautiful Kitchen!)

Beautiful Tustin kitchen remodel with floating shelvesWhether your kitchen remodeling budget is tight or you simply want to be smart with your money, knowing how to plan a kitchen remodel is absolutely essential for getting the most bang for your buck. With many kitchen renovations costing upwards of $20,000, it’s a significant investment in your home and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

With that in mind, let’s look at some ways you can save money on a kitchen remodel but still end up with a stunning kitchen that’s both functional and beautiful. You’ll find that all it takes is some diligent planning and a focus on what truly matters.

How to Save Money on a Kitchen Remodel

#1: Hire a professional kitchen designer.

Wait, aren’t we talking about saving money and not spending more of it? Yes!

At first glance, you may think that hiring a pro to design your kitchen will cost more money than it’s worth. While it’s true that there is an up-front cost to utilizing the services of a kitchen designer, it will actually help you save money on a kitchen remodel in the long run. That’s because a professional has both the expertise and the experience to help you avoid expensive remodeling mistakes.

In addition, someone who designs kitchens on a daily basis knows exactly what will work and where it should go to meet your kitchen renovation goals. This will save you a lot of hassle and time. And, you know what they say … time is money!

#2: Determine your kitchen renovation goals.

One of the easiest ways to save money on a kitchen remodel (or any remodeling project, for that matter) is to do it right the first time. In order to do that, you need to decide exactly what you hope to achieve by renovating the room. There’s no sense in spending the time and money to create a beautiful space, for example, when it looks pretty but doesn’t meet your needs.

Think about how your space needs to be used. Will multiple people be cooking at the same time? Would it be helpful to have a kitchen island with bar seating so your child can do their homework nearby while you prep meals? Do you plan to entertain often?

These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself while determining what matters most. When you know exactly what you must have, you’ll be able to make wise decisions when you have to choose between wants and needs in order to stay within your budget.

#3: Design with multiple uses and the future in mind.

Our clients are most satisfied with their kitchen remodel when they end up with a space that meets their needs now but will also do so in the future. For example, if you’re planning on having a family, it’s good to let that influence your kitchen design now. If you go with a kitchen built for two, you’ll be dissatisfied in a few years when you have several children who have to utilize the space, too. Save money on a kitchen remodel by planning ahead!

Also, think about how you will need to use the space in the very near future, such as during the holidays or when you entertain. If you normally only cook for two but frequently have guests, your kitchen size and design should reflect that. This includes not only the layout but also the appliances you choose. For example, you may want to opt for a larger cooktop to accommodate cooking for dinner guests.

#4: Make decisions based on value, not only on cost.

There are so many materials and products on the market these days that you may find it difficult which ones to choose. However, you can easily save money on a kitchen remodel simply by looking at the value these materials or products will bring.

For example, let’s say you’ve had your eye on a high-end dishwasher that cleans phenomenally and is also whisper-quiet. This product may be worth the extra money if you know it will save you time (no more pre-rinsing dishes!) or help cut down on noise since you have an open floor plan. For someone else, however, this product could simply be a luxury item and not truly add value to their everyday life.

It’s also helpful to think about how long you plan to live in your current home. If your kitchen remodel is simply a facelift so you can sell your home quickly, you can easily save money by just going with basic materials and appliances that aren’t top-of-the-line. In contrast, if this is your forever home, you’ll save money in the long run by getting what you want and need now (even if it costs a little more) versus having to replace it in a year or two because you skimped on price and quality.

#5: Evaluate function vs. beauty.

At Sea Pointe Design & Remodel, we always aim to help homeowners achieve both function and beauty with any remodeling project. Some of the materials that add the most beauty, however, are often also the most expensive. When cost is a question, it’s important to consider which is more important – the look the room will have with that product or material, or the functionality it will provide.

Orange County Kitchen Design and Remodeling

One word of caution for you as you begin to think about renovating your kitchen: Don’t focus so much on how to save money on a kitchen remodel that you don’t enjoy the process! Determining and then sticking to a remodeling budget is important but don’t lose sight of the end goal – the transformation of your current space into something you’ll love and enjoy now and in the future.

When Should You Hire a Design-Build Company?

When Should You Hire a Design-Build Company?

Residential-home-remodelers - design-build companyWhen you have a home remodeling project in mind, hiring the right remodeling contractor is one of the keys to its successful execution and completion. While you have many Orange County remodeling contractors from which to choose, we recommend hiring a design-build company for the best remodeling experience.

Let’s take a look at why …

What Does Design-Build Mean?

First, it’s important to understand exactly what the design-build concept includes. At first glance, you might guess that a design-build company designs and builds various remodeling projects. While that is true, it goes a little deeper than that.

Under the traditional construction process, homeowners work with multiple contractors and therefore, multiple contracts:

  • Designer or architect – This professional determines the overall look, style, and layout of the remodeling project.

  • General contractor – Once the design is finalized, this person or company then manages the actual building process, including subcontractors such as electricians, plumbers, and builders.

Under the design-build model, however, homeowners only need to be concerned with one contract. A design-build company utilizes an integrated approach to remodeling, having the services of a designer, engineer, and construction manager all under one roof. Any necessary subcontractors or specialty trades are managed under this single contract.

5 Key Benefits of Hiring a Design-Build Company for Your Home Renovation

For straightforward household repairs, such as the installation of a new roof utilizing the existing framework and roofline, following the traditional construction model works just fine. For more complex projects like kitchen remodels or bathroom renovations, or for anything that involves design work in addition to construction, a design-build company is better suited to the job. Here’s why …

  • One contract – As mentioned above, homeowners will only need to be concerned about a single contract that encompasses everything and everyone that the remodel will require. This also includes submitting and getting any necessary remodeling permits from local authorities.

  • Streamlined process – With one company handling everything, the entire process becomes more efficient and streamlined. This often results in fewer construction delays or wasted time.

  • Effective communication – As a homeowner, you can picture how quickly a remodeling project could be derailed when the parties involved don’t communicate efficiently. Or, you can see how you might not be satisfied with the results if your own wishes get distorted by being passed along from one contractor to another.

With a design-build company at your service, you have one point of contact that manages all other aspects of construction. Therefore, communication can be clear, effective, and efficient.

  • Accurate estimates – When the designer, engineer, and builder are all included in one contract, it’s much easier to have an accurate remodeling budget. And, with all of these people working collaboratively on the same team, it’s more likely to be able to stick to that budget.

An added bonus is that this teamwork between professionals can lead to innovative design and construction solutions that may not be possible under the traditional construction method.

  • Clear remodeling timelines – When everyone involved in your remodeling project is on the same team, you’ll also have a better idea about how long your remodel will take. This is especially important since some home renovations might require moving out of your home (such as with a whole house remodel) or at least vacating the space for a certain length of time.

6 Eco-Friendly Remodeling Trends In Your Home

6 Eco-Friendly Remodeling Trends In Your Home

Eco Freindly Remodeling Trends: Low Location for Microwave Drawer Appliance for Universal Design in Kitchen RemodelWhether you’re looking to save money or simply want to be more environmentally responsible, the latest eco-friendly remodeling trends in home renovation can help you do it all. Pick one from the list below and reap significant benefits. Or, integrate them all in your next remodeling project and enjoy a super-efficient home that’s great for you and the world around you!

Eco-Friendly Remodeling Trends To Start Using Today

#1: Install energy-efficient appliances with your home remodel

Whether you’re planning a whole house remodel or something on a smaller scale, such as a kitchen renovation, it’s not uncommon to replace appliances while you’re at it.

Of course, you’ll want to make sure the new appliances fit with your overall remodeling design. Beyond that, however, it’s a great idea to choose new eco-friendly and energy-efficient appliances. That means they may use less energy, less water, and even be quieter – a definite advantage if you have an open floor plan.

#2: Consider energy-efficient lighting in your remodeling design

Lighting is an important part of any successful remodel. Using sources of natural light, such as large windows or skylights, is a great way to illuminate a room without using electricity and can often make a space feel larger than it actually is.

When you do use artificial light, one of the most eco-friendly ways to do that is through the use of LED light bulbs. They last longer and use significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs. Plus, they don’t emit heat, a definite plus here in California. Many Orange County residents already find that they spend a great deal of money on home air conditioning each year. Using LED lights, however, can help reduce the heat coming from lighting and thereby lower AC costs.

In rooms such as the kitchen or a study, task lighting can also be an energy saver. Since it illuminates only one area instead of an entire room, this is an eco-friendly trend that not only saves energy but also looks neat, too.

#3: Embrace natural finishes for flooring and cabinets

Installing unpainted wood cabinets is already one of the most popular kitchen cabinet trends for 2022. But, consider going with the natural look wherever you’re remodeling in your home, not just in the kitchen. Whether it’s wood flooring or wood cabinets, choose a finish that’s low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

When you reduce the amount of VOCs in your home, it’s not only good for the environment, it’s good for your overall health, too. High VOC finishes can omit gasses that contribute to poor air quality, not something you want to expose yourself or your family to on a daily basis.

#4: Shop locally for remodeling materials such as wood or stone

Supporting local businesses has always been a great way to help your community. Now, however, it’s one of the most eco-friendly trends in home remodeling. That’s because when you shop locally, it can reduce the distance those materials have to travel, especially if they’re locally sourced (i.e. stone from a nearby quarry). With today’s high gas prices and supply chain challenges, it may also mean some savings for you in terms of time or money.

#5: Utilize recyclable, regenerative, or reused materials

Homeowners today are more cognizant of the environment than ever, making this one of the top eco-friendly trends in home remodeling. Here, we’re not talking about using old appliances in your brand new kitchen or reusing flooring that has seen its day and should be thrown out. Rather, we’re talking about utilizing materials that can easily be recycled when their useful life has passed, or materials made with sustainable practices.

For example, many wood products today are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. That means that the wood used in them was harvested using sustainable or regenerative methods – the forest is managed such that the wood taken out matches the amount of wood that can regrow and regenerate.

Other homeowners are choosing to use a combination of new and old items to create an eclectic design or a unique look. An example would be utilizing an antique table or pantry cupboard along with trendy materials or features to create a modern farmhouse kitchen.

#6: Remodel your home for the size you need

Remember the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears?’ Home remodeling is a bit like that. When your space is too small, it’s uncomfortable and doesn’t serve your family well. When it’s too big, it can be inefficient, use more energy, and cost you more than it should. Creating a space that’s just right, however, means that you can use fewer materials, less energy, improve efficiency, and be more sustainable.

Getting the design ‘just right’ often involves utilizing the services of a professional remodeling designer. That’s because they have the skills, expertise, and experience to design a space that will work now and also in the future. A professional designer can even help you have multi-functional spaces so you can do more with a smaller footprint.
