How to Get Organized for the New Year and Your Next Remodel

How to Get Organized for the New Year and Your Next Remodel

sultry-monochrome-kitchen-new-appliances - How To Get OrganizedWith the arrival of a new year on the calendar, it’s the perfect time to tackle some goals … get organized, take control of your finances, or start an exercise program. Whether you call it New Year’s resolutions or simply goal setting, the idea is the same – start the new year off with a fresh slate and see how far you can go!

While we’re not health, exercise, or financial experts, we do know a thing or two about taking care of your home, and getting organized is an essential part of that. The good news is that the same tactics you used to tidy your workspace for a new year at the office can also be put to use inside your home.

Today, we’re going to walk you through some simple steps you can do at home to get organized for the new year ahead.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or any other sizable home remodeling project, use these tips to declutter and organize your space. Then, you’ll know exactly what your space lacks that a remodel could fix.

7 Easy Steps to Help You Get Organized in the Kitchen

Custom cabinets with pullouts in open concept kitchen remodel - kitchen design features - How To Get Organized

The kitchen is one of the busiest and most used rooms in the house. As such, it’s important to keep it clean and clutter-free with everything having a home. To illustrate our top tips to help you get organized, we’re going to show you exactly what that looks like in the kitchen. Then, if there’s another room in the house you want to tackle, you can follow the same simple steps.

Step 1: Take inventory of what you have.

Start by emptying your cabinets, drawers, pantry cupboard, and any other storage area you have inside your kitchen. This will give you a full picture of what you have and perhaps more importantly, what you’re lacking.

Step 2: Decide what to keep, throw away, or recycle.

Maybe you got two sets of measuring cups for your wedding 10 years ago. Do you honestly need both of them? Instead of keeping something you don’t frequently use, think about who else could get better use out of the item. Maybe you have a child moving into their first apartment who could use some budget friendly, hand-me-down kitchen tools. Or, maybe the item is simply worn out and it should be thrown away altogether. By paring down what you have to only the essentials and frequently used items, it’ll be much easier to get organized and stay that way.

Step 3: Clean the pantry, kitchen cabinets, and drawers.

Now that everything’s out in the open, your storage areas will be wide open and clutter-free. This is the perfect time to clean them thoroughly so the items you return to the space will have a fresh place to live.

Step 4: Group items by how and where they’ll be used.

Just because something came out of one drawer, it doesn’t mean that’s the best place it should be stored. All of the items you’ve decided to keep need to have a home, but not just any home will do.

First, organize items by how they’re used. For example, meal preparation could be easier if you keep all of your measuring cups and spoons together. Then, think about where they will be used. Does most of your meal prep happen on top of your kitchen island? If so, consider putting these items in an island drawer instead of across the kitchen by the stove.

Step 5: Get organized with the right accessories and storage options.

Now that you know where to put each group of items, what does the intended storage space look like? Will you be able to keep the items organized there with ease? Or, do you need baskets, pull-outs, dividers, inserts, or other storage solutions to maximize the use and tidiness of the space?

Step 6: Put your organizational plan into practice.

At this point, you have your essential kitchen items, they’re organized by use and location, and your storage spaces are clean and ready. Now, put all of the items you’ve kept into their intended homes.

Step 7: Enjoy … and then re-evaluate.

Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy your newly organized space! Then, go about your daily life and see how things are working for you. After a few days or weeks, take some time to evaluate your organizational plan. Is it working? Do you need to make some changes to make it perfect? Don’t be afraid to rearrange as you see fit or contact your local remodeling expert for custom cabinetry that will better meet your needs.

Get Organized Before a Big Remodel

built-in-microwave-custom-omega-full-access-cabinetry

If you follow the simple steps above, it’ll be easy to see where your kitchen (or other room) works well and where it needs some help. That’s why we mentioned earlier that this exercise could be done before you start any major remodeling project.

Let’s take kitchen remodeling as an example. If you hire a kitchen designer (smart decision!) to plan your remodel, they’ll want to know what you like and dislike about your current kitchen. Going through the organizational exercise above will help you identify that with ease. Then, armed with this information, your designer will be better equipped to make design and functional recommendations to help you get the most out of your remodel.

6 Key Reasons to Hire a Kitchen Designer

6 Key Reasons to Hire a Kitchen Designer

Natural-materials-in-kitchen-remodel - kitchen designer

This Orange County kitchen remodel uses natural materials.

Hiring a kitchen designer may not be at the top of your to-do list if you’re an avid DIYer or simply trying to save money on your kitchen remodel. In reality, however, kitchen renovations can be complicated. And even a simple facelift can become an expensive nightmare if you’re not fully equipped to handle the job.

So, how do you get the most out of your kitchen remodel so you don’t waste time, money, and precious energy? It’s simple – hire a kitchen designer!

Why Should You Hire a Kitchen Designer for Your Kitchen Remodel?

To put it simply, hiring a kitchen designer is one of the best investments you can make if you want your kitchen remodel to look beautiful, be fully functional, and stay within your remodeling budget. Here are some great reasons to go with the pros instead of trying to remodel your kitchen by yourself:

1. You have layout or traffic flow concerns with your current kitchen.

Creative Backsplash Ideas - kitchen designer

For maximum function and usability, it’s imperative that your kitchen has a layout that works well. Maybe your current floor plan doesn’t allow for efficient meal prep. Or, perhaps, it doesn’t enable multiple people to easily occupy the space at the same time. If so, it could be time for some significant changes.

A kitchen designer can help you find solutions with kitchen design features that you may not even have considered before. Whether removing walls to open up the space, rearranging appliances and cabinets, or installing custom storage options, an expert designer can create a space that works well for you and your family.

2. You have design ideas you like but have no idea whether or not they’ll actually work in your kitchen.

With the popularity of TV remodeling shows and online resources such as Pinterest, Houzz, and YouTube, finding kitchen design ideas that suit your fancy is a simple task. What you may NOT find so easy is envisioning what those ideas will look like in real life in your own kitchen.

When you work with a professional kitchen designer, however, they often have design software that can help you visualize what your new kitchen will look like. Various fixtures, appliances, floor plans, cabinets, and more can all be ‘tried out’ before you actually commit to buying and installing them. Seeing what your ideas will look like before spending money on them is a great way to save time and hassle while also helping you stay within your remodeling budget.

3. You’re planning to sell your home in the next few years and want to increase its resale value.

Reasons To Hire A Kitchen Designer

As an established remodeling company in Orange County, CA, we often get asked what remodeling projects will pay off the most. This question typically comes from homeowners who anticipate selling their home in the near future and want to get the most for it.

The truth is that you’re not likely to get a dollar-for-dollar return on investment with a kitchen remodel. However, homes with newer, updated kitchens tend to be more appealing to potential buyers than older, outdated ones. A kitchen designer will be familiar with current kitchen design trends and those popular in your geographic area. They can help you combine these with your own design preferences to create a kitchen that meets your family’s current needs but could also be appealing to a potential buyer down the road.

4. Your kitchen needs an upgrade but you live in an older home.

Lake Forest kitchen remodel with two toned cabinets

Many older homes have unique designs and styles that are intriguing and visually interesting. It can be tricky to blend historic designs with modern updates, however. If your older kitchen needs a makeover, work with a kitchen designer to preserve some of its historic charms while simultaneously updating to modern conveniences.

5. Kitchen square footage is limited.

kitchen-remodel-with-antique-inspired-tile-backsplash-and-retro-kitchen-appliances

A small kitchen can certainly cramp your style and make it difficult for everyday family life as well as entertaining guests. When planned out thoughtfully, however, it IS possible to make a small kitchen work efficiently, even without additional square footage.

A kitchen designer will be able to assess your current floor plan in relation to adjacent rooms. They will see if square footage can be gained by moving walls or making other structural changes. Then, they can design the available space to maximize function.

6. You want a kitchen that’s both beautiful and functional.

remodel-luxury-vinyl-plank-flooring-waterproof-kitchen

Regardless of your kitchen’s size, there’s no reason you have to sacrifice function over aesthetics, or vice versa. It’s absolutely possible to have BOTH. A professional kitchen designer is equipped with the knowledge and expertise to create a space that works just as hard as you do while looking stunning at the same time. They will also have a good understanding of current market conditions and which materials are immediately available versus which ones may be difficult to obtain due to supply chain delays.

Pantry vs. Cabinets: Which Kitchen Storage Solution is the Best?

Pantry vs. Cabinets: Which Kitchen Storage Solution is the Best?

barn-door-with-sliding-system-pantry - Walk-In Pantries vs. Cabinet Pantries

Are you planning a kitchen remodel? There are some things you must do before you start remodeling. And one of the most important decisions you’ll face is choosing how to organize your storage. Should you go with a spacious walk-in pantry or a sleek cabinet pantry? The choice isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about functionality, space, and how you use your kitchen.

To make this decision easier, we’ve broken down the pros and cons of pantry vs. cabinets. So, if you prefer a more chef-centered space or need a practical solution for a busy household, this guide will give you the clarity you need to move forward confidently.

Walk-In Pantries: Pros and Cons

Why Choose a Walk-In Pantry?

Pantry with barn door in Anaheim Hills kitchen remodel

1. Provides More Storage Space

Walk-in pantries provide ample room to store bulk groceries, small appliances, and even cleaning supplies. They’re perfect for keeping countertops clutter-free. Whether you want to buy in bulk and cut down on grocery trips, a walk-in pantry makes it easy.

2. Ideal for Storing Large Appliances

Hate having your toaster, stand mixer or air fryer take up valuable counter space? A walk-in pantry can house these appliances neatly while keeping them easily accessible.

3. It Offers Endless Organization Options

With drawers, shelves, and custom cabinets galore, you can tailor your walk-in pantry to fit your unique needs. You can even install pull-out bins or labeled jars to create an organized space that sparks joy whenever you step inside.

The Downsides of Walk-in Pantries

1. Takes Up More Space

A walk-in pantry demands square footage. If your kitchen is tight on space, dedicating an entire area to a pantry might not be practical.

2. Not Always Convenient

Being a separate room, walk-in pantries may mean extra steps to grab ingredients or utensils, which can slow you down during busy cooking sessions.

3. Requires Higher Maintenance

More space equals more cleaning. Keeping shelves dust-free and items organized requires extra effort, especially if you’re a tidy freak.

Cabinet Pantries: Pros and Cons

Why Choose Cabinet Pantries?

hidden-pantry-custom-cabinets-mission-viejo

1. They Have Space-Efficient Design

Cabinet pantries are built into your kitchen’s layout, making them a compact and efficient storage solution. They’re ideal for smaller kitchens where every inch counts.

2. Provides Convenient Access

Located near cooking areas, cabinet pantries make grabbing spices, oils, or snacks easy without missing a beat. Pull-out drawers and “Lazy Susans” add even more convenience.

3. Have a Smaller Footprint

Unlike walk-in pantries, cabinet pantries don’t eat up valuable square footage. With clever design, they can store a surprising amount while keeping your kitchen looking sleek.

Trade-Offs of Cabinet Pantries

1. Limited storage

A cabinet pantry can’t match the storage capacity of a walk-in pantry. You might feel cramped if you like to stockpile groceries or own many kitchen gadgets.

2. Challenging for Larger Appliances

Need a place for that bread maker or slow cooker? Cabinet pantries often lack the space to house bulky appliances.

3. Can Take Up Counter Space

Depending on placement, a cabinet pantry might reduce your available counter space. Adding a kitchen island can help balance the layout.

Which One Is Best for You?

When it comes to pantry vs. cabinets, the right choice depends on your lifestyle. If you cook for a large family or love buying in bulk, a walk-in pantry should be your top pick. But if you’re short on space and prefer efficiency, cabinet pantries offer a compact and practical solution.

FAQs

What’s the main difference between a walk-in pantry and a cabinet pantry?

A walk-in pantry is a separate room with extensive storage, while a cabinet pantry is a built-in unit within your kitchen layout, offering compact storage.

Can I have both a walk-in pantry and cabinet pantries?

Yes. Many kitchens combine the two for maximum flexibility. A walk-in pantry can store bulk items, while cabinet pantries provide quick access to everyday essentials.

How do I decide which pantry type is right for my kitchen?

Consider your kitchen size, cooking habits, and storage needs. A walk-in pantry suits larger kitchens and families, while cabinet pantries are great for small spaces and efficient layouts.

Are cabinet pantries more affordable than walk-in pantries?

Generally, yes. Cabinet pantries require less space and fewer materials, making them a cost-effective option. However, customization can affect the price.

What are some trending pantry designs?

Popular trends include pull-out shelves, glass-front cabinets, and built-in lighting for cabinet pantries. For walk-in pantries, floor-to-ceiling shelving and chalkboard walls are stylish and functional.

Get the Most Out of Your Kitchen Remodel

Get the Most Out of Your Kitchen Remodel

bold-transitional-kitchen-remodel-in-lake-forestFlooring, fixtures, appliances, cabinets … If you want to get the most out of your kitchen remodel, these are just a few of the things you must consider. And for many homeowners, the sheer number of decisions that must be made can make planning a kitchen remodel feel daunting.

While it is true that kitchen renovations require a great deal of planning, there’s no need to stress. Today, we’re going to walk you through the top features you need to consider so you can get the most out of your kitchen remodel. Yes, there will be other decisions you’ll have to make in addition to these. But when you prioritize these 6 upgrades, the smaller decisions won’t feel quite so overwhelming.

Get the Most Out of Your Kitchen Remodel by Prioritizing These 6 Kitchen Upgrades

1. Appealing but Durable Flooring

Open concept design with wall removed

The kitchen is fondly referred to as the heart of the home but as such, it sees a fair amount of daily foot traffic. Add to that the presence of moisture, heat, and food spills and it’s easy to see why durable flooring is a necessity. Durable doesn’t have to equate to drab, however.

As you think about which type of flooring makes the most sense for your kitchen, here are some key factors to consider:

  • Durability
  • Ease of cleaning
  • Texture
  • Color/design
  • Warmth
  • Cost

With all of the flooring options available on the market today, there’s no need to sacrifice beauty for function. To get the most out of your kitchen remodel, pick the flooring that best meets your family’s needs but also looks beautiful and fits with the overall design.

2. A Multifunctional Kitchen Island is a Kitchen Remodel Necessity

kitchen-island-remodel-custom-cabinetry-quartz-countertop

Perhaps one of the most understated kitchen upgrades is a multifunctional island. While kitchen islands of the past were all about adding more countertop space, the modern island goes far beyond that.

Some of the top benefits of including a multifunctional island in your kitchen remodel are the added storage areas and extra countertop space. But islands can also provide more seating as well as house appliances and sinks. In addition, the island can be a visual boundary between the kitchen and adjacent living spaces in an open concept floor plan without taking away from the spacious feel of the room. Ultimately, a well-designed island can help you get the most out of your kitchen remodel because it gives you added function and flexibility in a relatively small space.

3. Tasteful Tile Backsplash

Blue-herringbone-tile-backsplash-in-kitchen-remodel

A tile backsplash has many practical applications in the kitchen. It makes cleaning so much easier while also protecting the walls from food, heat, and moisture. But there’s so much you can do with the tile design itself to add to your kitchen’s decor and visual intrigue.

A tile backsplash can be a subtle backdrop that allows beautiful cabinetry to stand out. Or, the backsplash can be more of a statement all its own with stunning colors or unique designs.

If you’re interested in how a tile backsplash can help you get the most out of your kitchen remodel, check out 5 Creative Kitchen Backsplash Ideas For Your Kitchen Remodel.

4. Add Ample and Accessible Storage In Your Kitchen Remodel

Custom cabinets with pullouts in open concept kitchen remodel - kitchen design featuresStorage is one of the key factors that can make or break your kitchen remodel. If you don’t plan for enough storage options, you risk having a cluttered or messy kitchen. On the other hand, if you don’t plan for the right type of storage, you can keep kitchen accessories out of sight but they may be difficult to reach.

To get the most out of your kitchen remodel, we recommend choosing ample and accessible storage. That means that the quantity of cabinets, shelves, and drawers should be sufficient to easily store your kitchen items that you want out of sight. But it also means using pull-out drawers inside cabinets, slide-out shelves, or other features to ensure that those items can easily be retrieved when needed. When you plan your kitchen remodel with accessibility in mind, everyone wins, especially if this is your forever home and you plan to age in place here.

5. The Perfect Pantry

Butlers pantry remodel

While we’re on the topic of storage, let’s not forget the pantry. If the square footage of your kitchen doesn’t allow for a walk-in pantry, don’t worry. There are plenty of pantry cabinets that can provide the storage space you need but with a relatively small footprint. Many of them have pull-out drawers so that food items are easily accessible whether they’re stored in the front of the cabinet or in the back.

6. Layered Lighting in your kitchen remodel

Coastal Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel in Huntington Beach

From meal prep and cooking to seating areas and more, your kitchen can host a variety of activities. With each activity, however, comes a unique lighting need. Food prep areas may require more direct lighting, for example, while an eating nook may feel more cozy with soft overhead lights. You’ll get the most out of your kitchen remodel when you work with a kitchen designer to plan exactly what type of lighting is appropriate for each space.
