Indecisiveness is inevitable when it comes to tile selection, and we always encourage our clients to think outside the box. Direct Access to Outdoors

Incorporating the outdoors into your kitchen remodel is an easy decision to make when living in sunny Southern California. With an average of 285 days of perfect weather per year, the backyard is easily considered part of a home’s living space. Replacing an exterior wall with large format bi-fold doors creates a seamless indoor-outdoor kitchen design that is perfect for both entertaining friends and keeping an eye on dinner while playing with the kids. Not only do bi-fold doors bring next level design and functionality to your kitchen remodel, but taking advantage of a bi-folding door system also allows for ample natural light.

Destination Islands

SIZZLING KITCHEN REMODEL IN IRVINE

SIZZLING KITCHEN REMODEL IN IRVINE

We are very excited to share this gorgeous kitchen in Irvine on the blog today. These Sea Pointe clients love to cook and were ready to come home to their dream kitchen. Since they were willing to think outside the box , they decided on two cabinet door styles in their kitchen—one for the upper cabinets and one for the base cabinets. All cabinets are Bellmont 1900 series and for the base cabinets they decided on the Kahana door style in Sapele with French Roast. For the perimeter cabinets, as well as the uppers, they went with the Islands door style in Sapele Natural with a Caramelized Bamboo finish. On their large island they blended both kitchen cabinet styles to create synergy throughout the kitchen.  To check out more before and after pictures, see our facebook photo album: Sizzling Kitchen Remodel.

To bring interest to the island, our Sea Pointe designer helped our clients to pick out a slab of Silver Wave, a natural stone with tons of movement, while picking  a quartz product from Cambria for the perimeter countertops (style shown is Buckingham). You’ll also note that we added glass door panels on each end of the island to add another elegant design element to the kitchen.

The backsplash in this kitchen is a glass mosaic in Golden Gate with a 4 metal liner that is carried over from behind the hood.  The appliances chosen by the client include a Wolf dual fuel range, chimney hood, and drawer microwave oven.They also add a wine cooler for entertaining in addition to the Sub-Zero side-by-side refrigerator.

Once we began construction, this couple also decided to replace their front entry tile to tie into the new kitchen as well as giving the adjoining powder room a facelift.Sea Pointe also helped re-construct their fireplace and built-in entertainment center to round out the great room space.

Open floor plans have gained popularity over the last few years, which typically open the family room and kitchen to one another creating a great room. An open floor plan allows a family to spend quality time together, without infringing on each other’s personal space and activities. Below we answer common questions that come our way.

What do you need to think about when designing an open plan kitchen?
You have to consider all the activities that will take place in the room, and how they can work together. Preparing meals, watching television, surfing the internet, doing homework, paying the bills, relaxing with a magazine and chatting with friends you have to make sure these can all happily co-exist in your open plan kitchen.
To cater for all these different needs, it’s always best to work with an experienced designer that can customize your space. An experienced kitchen designer’s job is to help homeowners maximize space and functionality of a room and ensure there is a seamless feel between all parts.

What are the practical considerations?
Many of our clients love to entertain, but it doesn’t always mean they need huge double ovens taking up tons of wall space and storage. Consider using a range with a small side oven to replace your second large oven. Another option is to go with a convection microwave that can be used as a microwave for the day-to-day cooking and switched to an oven when you have a few extra guests.

Do you have any recommendations for colors?
It’s important to think about the overall theme of the room. Usually it makes sense to match the kitchen style to existing furniture in order to cut costs.
Simple, light paint tones are often used in open plan kitchens as they enhance the proportions of the room: darker colors or more detailed wall papers would detract from the overall feel and ambiance of the new space.

If you have a large enough space, you can add seating on the end of your island. It creates a great space to do homework, pay bills and socialize with the chef of the house. From a design perspective, you can get creative and pick a different color for the island than the rest of the cabinetry, or select a fun countertop material that is different than the rest of the kitchen.

Because it’s man-made, it always has even color distribution throughout the slab and is less porous than granite, so it will never need to be re-sealed after installation.

Create a Great Room

Many home buyers are in the market for an open kitchen/great room space.If you have a wall separating your kitchen from your living space, consider removing it and adding an island instead.Make sure to remember to check with your home remodeling company to make sure it is not a structural wall supporting your roof (uou don’t want the second story crashing down on your family pizza night). This is a great way to add value to your family’s home for the future, while creating a fun, entertaining environment for next weekend’s game night.

Replace Old Appliances

If your appliances are more than 10 years old, consider buying new ones that use less energy.The energy efficient appliances cost a little more upfront, but the money you save on energy bills in the long run more than makes up for the initial price difference.Likewise, environment-friendly water heaters and furnaces pay back the cost after a few years of service and will continue to be good for your pocketbook for years to come.

Change the BacksplashKitchen Backsplash

Look at this picture.What stands out the most to you?The counter or the backsplash? Add personality to your kitchen remodel with a new backsplash.These days the choices are limitless for knockout decorative pieces in glass or metal, or install a crisp subway ceramic tile pattern if you’re on a budget.Try to select backsplash materials that compliment your kitchen cabinetry.

Cabinet & Drawer PullsIt’s the Little Things

If you’re not quite ready to do a full kitchen remodel, start with updating small items that pack a big punch. Modernize the hardware on your kitchen cabinets.This can immediately spruce up dull kitchen cabinets that you aren’t ready to part with. Another option is to switch out old light fixtures.This can instantly brighten up the room, but remember to consider if the fixture is shedding light up or down. You need bright ceilings in order for the up lighting to reflect back down on your workspace.
