Selecting A Kitchen Sink: Key Factors to Consider

Selecting A Kitchen Sink: Key Factors to Consider

White farmhouse kitchen sink and blue cabinetsWhether you’re planning an entire kitchen remodel or you simply want to upgrade what you already have, choosing the right kitchen sink is essential. With the wide variety of options available on the market today, however, how will you ever select the best one? We’re here to help you answer that very question with some key factors to consider during the selection process.

5 Kitchen Sink Factors That Impact Style and Performance

1. Kitchen Sink Material

French scroll design on kitchen sink in Lake Forest kitchen remodel

From stainless steel and quartz composite to cast iron, porcelain, and more, the options for kitchen sink materials might seem almost endless. That’s why it’s important to understand how each type performs in terms of:

  • Overall durability
  • Price
  • Ease of cleaning
  • Scratch, stain, and hard water resistance
  • Antimicrobial capabilities
  • … And more

Of course, the appearance of the material matters too, as you seek to combine aesthetics with function in a way that makes your kitchen a beautiful but efficient place to work. Below, we’ve listed a few popular kitchen sink materials along with some of their most and least desirable qualities.

Common Kitchen Sink Materials:

  • Stainless Steel – With an average lifespan of 15-30 years, stainless steel sinks are a smart choice if you’re looking for durability, scratch and stain resistance, and easy cleaning at an affordable price. If you have hard water, though, you may have to put up with pesky water spots or hard water stains.

  • Cast Iron – Sinks made from this material can be very heavy but on the positive side, last 20-30 years! Cast iron sinks are also hard water and scratch resistant, easy to clean, and can fit perfectly in a farmhouse style kitchen. They are susceptible to scratches though, and come with a higher price tag than stainless steel.

  • Quartz Composite – Do you like the look of stone but you’re not a fan of the high price tag that comes along with it? A kitchen sink made from quartz composite could be the solution! This material is extremely durable, has a stone-like appearance, and is resistant to heat, sound, scratches, dents, stains, and hard water. If you’re a little klutzy, however, it may not be so forgiving when you drop dishes in the sink.

Of course, the list of kitchen sink materials goes on and on (copper, fireclay, brass, granite, etc.) but you get the idea. If you’re not sure what material to choose, work with a professional kitchen designer to find out what will work best for your specific situation.

2. Type of Installation

farmhouse-sink-kitchen-renovation - kitchen sink

In the past, there weren’t a lot of sink installation types to consider. With today’s modern sinks, however, you can get a drop-in, undermount, apron-front, or integral installation. Drop-in sinks are the most traditional option and are the easiest and cheapest installation method. On the opposite end of the spectrum are integral sinks which are installed seamlessly with the adjacent countertop and made of the same material.

The choice here ultimately comes down to two primary factors:

  • The overall look you want to achieve
  • How much money you have in your remodeling budget

3. Kitchen Sink Depthfarmhouse kitchen sink

The size of your sink’s bowl can have a significant impact on how easy it is to use. If you wash large pots and pans by hand, for example, a deep sink is ideal. The deeper the sink, the more room it takes up, however, so you’ll also need to consider how much room is necessary in the cabinet below. Deeper sinks are also more difficult for children or shorter people to reach into and may be cumbersome for extremely tall people to use, too.

How do you decide which kitchen sink depth is right for you? Consider the ways in which you’ll be using the sink as well as who will be using it most on a regular basis.

4. Kitchen Sink Width and Bowl Arrangement

Divided Sink Inset Into Quartz Countertop on Peninsula in Newport Beach Remodel

While depth is certainly important, overall width is a key factor to consider, too. In addition, you’ll want to decide whether your sink should be one bowl or multiple.

Again, your final decision will usually come down to who’s using the sink and how it’s being used. Cost is also a factor, with larger sinks costing more, and appearance matters, too. You’ll want a sink that’s big enough for what you need to do but not oversized for the space it’s in.

5. Location, Location, Location

sink-faucet-garbage-disposal

Where your kitchen sink is located is just as important as what it’s made out of and how it looks. For example, if you have a dishwasher, the sink should be located within easy reaching distance. This makes for an efficient work space as dishes are rinsed and then placed in the dishwasher for final washing.

Also consider what someone standing at the sink will have to look at. For kitchen sinks installed on outside walls, it’s nice to have a window above the sink so there’s something of interest in view. Similarly, sinks installed in a kitchen island could look out over an adjacent room or dining area.

5 Common Remodeling Mistakes and How to Prevent Them

5 Common Remodeling Mistakes and How to Prevent Them

Biggest Remodeling MistakesWhile planning a home renovation can be exciting and fulfilling, making some common remodeling mistakes can leave you with results that are less than desirable. Instead of wasting valuable resources on something you’ll regret later, we recommend knowing exactly what you’re getting into and how to get the most out of your remodel.

Today, we’re going to walk you through some of the most common remodeling regrets homeowners have. With each one, we’ll provide a prevention tip so you can avoid these costly remodeling mistakes and achieve the end result you truly want!

Avoid These 5 Big Remodeling Mistakes

1. Failing to Create an Accurate Remodeling Budget

Remodeling Budget

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that home renovations cost money. The bigger question is how much money? Then, there’s the question of whether you can actually afford the changes that you’re picturing in your mind’s eye.

One of the key remodeling mistakes homeowners make is underestimating how much their remodeling project will cost. Sometimes, it’s simply because remodeling is not something you do on a regular basis. Since it’s unfamiliar territory, you may have an unclear picture of what materials and labor can add up to. Other times, remodeling costs can drastically increase due to unforeseen circumstances that arise during the remodeling process.

Prevention Tip: Before your renovation begins, it’s essential to create an accurate remodeling budget. First, decide how much money you have available to spend. Then, gather your ideas and visions for the space. Work with a home design professional to determine how feasible those ideas are and how much they will cost. A good remodeling contractor will also recommend adding 10-20% on top of your expected costs to account for the unexpected ones. If this new total fits within your budget, you’re good to go! If it doesn’t, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

2. Having a Budget But Leaving Out Important Details

Kitchen Remodeling Cost Orange County

Now that you have a reasonable overall dollar amount in mind, you’re off to a good start. But, don’t stop there! Another remodeling mistake homeowners make is having a good general budget amount but not breaking it down into further details.

Prevention Tip: The more detailed your remodeling budget is, the easier it will be to track expenditures during the remodeling process. For example, when materials come in over or under budget, you and your contractor will easily be able to see what areas are affected. Then, you can work together to make the changes needed to accommodate the difference.

3. Choosing DIY vs. a Professional Remodeling Contractor

Residential-remodeling-contractor what to do before you start remodeling - remodeling timeline

Turn on the TV these days and it’s easy to find a channel touting the glories of DIY home renovations. Demolition day looks fun and the before and after pictures of the remodeling project look amazing! What’s not often included in the picture, however, are the countless hours of labor required to get the job done, fix mistakes, and deal with all the unexpected issues that arise.

Yes, there are some home renovation projects that absolutely can be done on your own. Repainting a room or replacing some trim are two simple examples. But for more involved projects, such as a kitchen remodel or bathroom renovation, it’s usually best to hire a professional. That’s because mistakes made with plumbing, electrical, or other construction elements are common and can lead to added expense and completion time.

Prevention Tip: Know your limitations! If you’re not a skilled tradesman or master builder yourself, don’t be afraid to hire a professional contractor to do the job. Yes, it will cost more money up front. However, working with a professional means you’re free to continue with your life as usual – no using up your precious vacation days on a house project that drags out over weeks and months! An expert remodeling contractor can often get the job done in significantly less time vs. doing it yourself. And, some offer satisfaction guarantees or warranties for their work so you’ll be covered if any issues arise within a specified time after project completion.

4. Working with the Cheapest Local Remodeling Company

Home remodeling with a general contractor

Now you know that it’s important to hire a professional but remember … not just any professional will do! There are many contractors who claim to know what they’re doing and are willing to charge a bargain price for the work they do.

Here’s where the old saying “you get what you pay for” certainly rings true. The cheapest remodeling quote often equates to the cheapest work in terms of value and quality. The last thing you want to do is spend our hard-earned money on hiring a contractor that does shoddy work or doesn’t stand behind their work.

Prevention Tip: Do your homework! Research local remodeling contractors in your area. Talk to friends, family members, and neighbors who’ve had work done on their homes and see who they recommend. Read online reviews and check out portfolios of work completed by different contractors. Then, once you get a quote, make sure you fully understand what’s included in the estimate and perhaps more importantly, what’s not.

5. Focusing Primarily on Appearance and Not on Function

open-layout-whole-home-remodel-in-laguna-niguel

There’s no doubt that different home renovations can make your house have greater curb appeal, make it easier to sell, or simply make it a more enjoyable space in which to live. While appearances do matter, don’t forget about function!

One of the most common remodeling mistakes homeowners make is focusing more on aesthetics than how the space will actually work in terms of traffic flow and everyday use. It’s easy to do, especially when you’ve saved dozens of picture-perfect renovations to your Pinterest board as ideas for your own project.

Prevention Tip: When you’re looking for a local remodeling company to work with, choose one that also has a design team. A design professional can help bring your remodeling ideas to fruition, combining your style preferences with tried and true design techniques to make the space beautiful AND functional. It IS possible to have both beauty and purpose!

How to Get Organized for the New Year and Your Next Remodel

How to Get Organized for the New Year and Your Next Remodel

sultry-monochrome-kitchen-new-appliances - How To Get OrganizedWith the arrival of a new year on the calendar, it’s the perfect time to tackle some goals … get organized, take control of your finances, or start an exercise program. Whether you call it New Year’s resolutions or simply goal setting, the idea is the same – start the new year off with a fresh slate and see how far you can go!

While we’re not health, exercise, or financial experts, we do know a thing or two about taking care of your home, and getting organized is an essential part of that. The good news is that the same tactics you used to tidy your workspace for a new year at the office can also be put to use inside your home.

Today, we’re going to walk you through some simple steps you can do at home to get organized for the new year ahead.

Pro tip: If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or any other sizable home remodeling project, use these tips to declutter and organize your space. Then, you’ll know exactly what your space lacks that a remodel could fix.

7 Easy Steps to Help You Get Organized in the Kitchen

Custom cabinets with pullouts in open concept kitchen remodel - kitchen design features - How To Get Organized

The kitchen is one of the busiest and most used rooms in the house. As such, it’s important to keep it clean and clutter-free with everything having a home. To illustrate our top tips to help you get organized, we’re going to show you exactly what that looks like in the kitchen. Then, if there’s another room in the house you want to tackle, you can follow the same simple steps.

Step 1: Take inventory of what you have.

Start by emptying your cabinets, drawers, pantry cupboard, and any other storage area you have inside your kitchen. This will give you a full picture of what you have and perhaps more importantly, what you’re lacking.

Step 2: Decide what to keep, throw away, or recycle.

Maybe you got two sets of measuring cups for your wedding 10 years ago. Do you honestly need both of them? Instead of keeping something you don’t frequently use, think about who else could get better use out of the item. Maybe you have a child moving into their first apartment who could use some budget friendly, hand-me-down kitchen tools. Or, maybe the item is simply worn out and it should be thrown away altogether. By paring down what you have to only the essentials and frequently used items, it’ll be much easier to get organized and stay that way.

Step 3: Clean the pantry, kitchen cabinets, and drawers.

Now that everything’s out in the open, your storage areas will be wide open and clutter-free. This is the perfect time to clean them thoroughly so the items you return to the space will have a fresh place to live.

Step 4: Group items by how and where they’ll be used.

Just because something came out of one drawer, it doesn’t mean that’s the best place it should be stored. All of the items you’ve decided to keep need to have a home, but not just any home will do.

First, organize items by how they’re used. For example, meal preparation could be easier if you keep all of your measuring cups and spoons together. Then, think about where they will be used. Does most of your meal prep happen on top of your kitchen island? If so, consider putting these items in an island drawer instead of across the kitchen by the stove.

Step 5: Get organized with the right accessories and storage options.

Now that you know where to put each group of items, what does the intended storage space look like? Will you be able to keep the items organized there with ease? Or, do you need baskets, pull-outs, dividers, inserts, or other storage solutions to maximize the use and tidiness of the space?

Step 6: Put your organizational plan into practice.

At this point, you have your essential kitchen items, they’re organized by use and location, and your storage spaces are clean and ready. Now, put all of the items you’ve kept into their intended homes.

Step 7: Enjoy … and then re-evaluate.

Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy your newly organized space! Then, go about your daily life and see how things are working for you. After a few days or weeks, take some time to evaluate your organizational plan. Is it working? Do you need to make some changes to make it perfect? Don’t be afraid to rearrange as you see fit or contact your local remodeling expert for custom cabinetry that will better meet your needs.

Get Organized Before a Big Remodel

built-in-microwave-custom-omega-full-access-cabinetry

If you follow the simple steps above, it’ll be easy to see where your kitchen (or other room) works well and where it needs some help. That’s why we mentioned earlier that this exercise could be done before you start any major remodeling project.

Let’s take kitchen remodeling as an example. If you hire a kitchen designer (smart decision!) to plan your remodel, they’ll want to know what you like and dislike about your current kitchen. Going through the organizational exercise above will help you identify that with ease. Then, armed with this information, your designer will be better equipped to make design and functional recommendations to help you get the most out of your remodel.

The Ultimate Shower Remodeling Guide to Elevate Your Bathroom’s Design

The Ultimate Shower Remodeling Guide to Elevate Your Bathroom’s Design

Shower Tile Designs - shower remodeling guideShower remodeling may not make your list of the top 10 dinner conversation topics. But choosing the right shower design could make a huge difference in how your bathroom remodel turns out. That’s because your shower is used on a daily basis, or at least several times a week, by one or more household members.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as a variety of other sources, the average shower takes about 8 minutes. In that short time, approximately 16 gallons of water is used, and you’re able to take care of essential hygiene tasks that keep your body healthy. Beyond the physical benefits, many people find that showering is an invigorating way to start the day or a relaxing way to unwind after the day is done.

Regardless of how and when you shower, your shower’s overall design and details can significantly impact how well it meets your needs. Today, we’re going to walk you through some shower remodeling basics so you know exactly what aspects to consider as you plan your bathroom renovation.

Shower Remodeling 101: 4 Important Factors to Consider

1. How is Your Shower Enclosed?

carrera-vento-honed-penny-mosaic-floor-tiles

If you’re not a bathroom designer or haven’t done any shower remodeling in recent years, you might be surprised to learn that showers can have a variety of enclosures. The most common options are listed below.

  • Open Shower – Depending on your bathroom’s size and layout, your shower may have three walls but be open on the fourth side.
  • Tub/Shower Combo – Although not as popular as they once were, combination tub/shower units are still an option. They can be enclosed by glass (the more modern choice) or a shower curtain (traditional).
  • Glass Enclosures: Blocks, Texture, Frameless – Glass enclosures are becoming more popular, perhaps because they’re easy to clean. But it may also be because they create the illusion of more space, the perfect solution to making a small bathroom look bigger than it actually is. Options include stacked glass blocks (which can vary in color, thickness, and size), textured or frosted glass, and even a frameless glass enclosure for a sleek, modern look.

2. What Are Your Shower Walls Made Of?

Large Walk in Shower Remodel With Herringbone Tile and Linear Drain - shower remodeling guide

The type of shower wall material you choose can significantly affect how long it lasts, how easy it is to clean, and how it contributes to (or detracts from) your overall bathroom design. Here are some of the most popular choices available on the market today:

  • Ceramic Tiles – Ceramic is relatively inexpensive compared to other shower wall materials, and the tiles come in a variety of colors with either glossy or matte finishes. They can also be arranged in various patterns to add visual intrigue to the space.
  • Glass Tiles – Since glass is non-porous, it’s an excellent choice for shower walls. These tiles are durable, easy to clean, and available with glossy, frosted, or textured surfaces.
  • Marble – Although often higher in price, marble used to line shower walls can add a feeling of elegance and luxury to your bathroom. However, special maintenance or cleaning guidelines may need to be followed for marble tiles, so be sure to ask your designer ahead of time what will be required.
  • Porcelain Tiles – As with ceramic and glass, porcelain tiles can create a trendy or unique look inside your shower with a wide variety of colors and designs available.

3. Types of Shower Heads

raised-shower-head-sliding-shower-bar-with-shower-wand-and-hose

Just like other home renovation projects, shower remodeling is often about combining functional aspects with the desire for something that’s also aesthetically pleasing. Shower heads certainly fall into this category, as pretty much any one of them can physically get your body clean, but some look and function better than others.

  • Shower Heads Mounted on the Wall – This is perhaps the most popular shower head style. Mounted directly on the shower wall, the shower head is situated at an angle and can be adjusted as needed. Newer models also include the ability to adjust water pressure, speed, and spray pattern for the ultimate showering experience.
  • Handheld Shower Heads – This option is great for rinsing, bathing small children, or even cleaning the shower itself. Handheld shower heads may be stand-alone units or used in combination with wall-mounted heads.
  • Overhead and Rain Shower Heads – Depending on your showering preference, you could opt for a ceiling-mounted or rain shower head. Both options send water cascading straight downward versus the angled flow of a traditional wall-mounted head.
  • Water-Saving Shower Heads – If water conservation is of concern, like it is here in Orange County, CA, installing a water-saving shower head could help you reduce water and energy usage while still having a pleasant showering experience. The EPA promotes shower heads with a WaterSense label, a simple way to identify fixtures that have been proven to use less water.

4. Shower Remodeling Customizations

steam-shower-multifunction-rainhead

If you read our blog about creative kitchen tile backsplashes, you already know that tile can be used in a variety of ways to create unique and stunning designs. And, what’s true in the kitchen can also be used in shower remodeling – any of the shower tiles we listed above can be used to give your shower a customized look that either blends well with the rest of the room’s design or makes a statement all its own.

Another type of shower customization that today’s homeowners consider is a built-in bench or shampoo niche. We love built-in niches because they provide a great place to store bathing accessories where they’re needed most. But they also offer a unique area for tile accents that can take your shower design to the next level.

Shiplap lined walls by freestanding tub

Built-in benches are custom features that can be useful for people of all ages, providing a place to sit in the shower that’s also visually appealing. And, for homeowners wanting to age in place, a built-in bench will certainly come in handy down the road if they experience any mobility challenges.

Pantry vs. Cabinets: Which Kitchen Storage Solution is the Best?

Pantry vs. Cabinets: Which Kitchen Storage Solution is the Best?

barn-door-with-sliding-system-pantry - Walk-In Pantries vs. Cabinet Pantries

Are you planning a kitchen remodel? There are some things you must do before you start remodeling. And one of the most important decisions you’ll face is choosing how to organize your storage. Should you go with a spacious walk-in pantry or a sleek cabinet pantry? The choice isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about functionality, space, and how you use your kitchen.

To make this decision easier, we’ve broken down the pros and cons of pantry vs. cabinets. So, if you prefer a more chef-centered space or need a practical solution for a busy household, this guide will give you the clarity you need to move forward confidently.

Walk-In Pantries: Pros and Cons

Why Choose a Walk-In Pantry?

Pantry with barn door in Anaheim Hills kitchen remodel

1. Provides More Storage Space

Walk-in pantries provide ample room to store bulk groceries, small appliances, and even cleaning supplies. They’re perfect for keeping countertops clutter-free. Whether you want to buy in bulk and cut down on grocery trips, a walk-in pantry makes it easy.

2. Ideal for Storing Large Appliances

Hate having your toaster, stand mixer or air fryer take up valuable counter space? A walk-in pantry can house these appliances neatly while keeping them easily accessible.

3. It Offers Endless Organization Options

With drawers, shelves, and custom cabinets galore, you can tailor your walk-in pantry to fit your unique needs. You can even install pull-out bins or labeled jars to create an organized space that sparks joy whenever you step inside.

The Downsides of Walk-in Pantries

1. Takes Up More Space

A walk-in pantry demands square footage. If your kitchen is tight on space, dedicating an entire area to a pantry might not be practical.

2. Not Always Convenient

Being a separate room, walk-in pantries may mean extra steps to grab ingredients or utensils, which can slow you down during busy cooking sessions.

3. Requires Higher Maintenance

More space equals more cleaning. Keeping shelves dust-free and items organized requires extra effort, especially if you’re a tidy freak.

Cabinet Pantries: Pros and Cons

Why Choose Cabinet Pantries?

hidden-pantry-custom-cabinets-mission-viejo

1. They Have Space-Efficient Design

Cabinet pantries are built into your kitchen’s layout, making them a compact and efficient storage solution. They’re ideal for smaller kitchens where every inch counts.

2. Provides Convenient Access

Located near cooking areas, cabinet pantries make grabbing spices, oils, or snacks easy without missing a beat. Pull-out drawers and “Lazy Susans” add even more convenience.

3. Have a Smaller Footprint

Unlike walk-in pantries, cabinet pantries don’t eat up valuable square footage. With clever design, they can store a surprising amount while keeping your kitchen looking sleek.

Trade-Offs of Cabinet Pantries

1. Limited storage

A cabinet pantry can’t match the storage capacity of a walk-in pantry. You might feel cramped if you like to stockpile groceries or own many kitchen gadgets.

2. Challenging for Larger Appliances

Need a place for that bread maker or slow cooker? Cabinet pantries often lack the space to house bulky appliances.

3. Can Take Up Counter Space

Depending on placement, a cabinet pantry might reduce your available counter space. Adding a kitchen island can help balance the layout.

Which One Is Best for You?

When it comes to pantry vs. cabinets, the right choice depends on your lifestyle. If you cook for a large family or love buying in bulk, a walk-in pantry should be your top pick. But if you’re short on space and prefer efficiency, cabinet pantries offer a compact and practical solution.

FAQs

What’s the main difference between a walk-in pantry and a cabinet pantry?

A walk-in pantry is a separate room with extensive storage, while a cabinet pantry is a built-in unit within your kitchen layout, offering compact storage.

Can I have both a walk-in pantry and cabinet pantries?

Yes. Many kitchens combine the two for maximum flexibility. A walk-in pantry can store bulk items, while cabinet pantries provide quick access to everyday essentials.

How do I decide which pantry type is right for my kitchen?

Consider your kitchen size, cooking habits, and storage needs. A walk-in pantry suits larger kitchens and families, while cabinet pantries are great for small spaces and efficient layouts.

Are cabinet pantries more affordable than walk-in pantries?

Generally, yes. Cabinet pantries require less space and fewer materials, making them a cost-effective option. However, customization can affect the price.

What are some trending pantry designs?

Popular trends include pull-out shelves, glass-front cabinets, and built-in lighting for cabinet pantries. For walk-in pantries, floor-to-ceiling shelving and chalkboard walls are stylish and functional.
