Open shelves offer a look with universal appeal. They enable homeowners to showcase a dramatic back splash, display dishes, pottery, sculptures, plants, herbs, and dishware and glassware, among numerous other options. Plus, open shelves provide home chefs with the functionality to access their favorite cooking tools within arm’s reach. So, what’s the downside? Open shelves limit storage and can contribute to a cluttered look and feel.

In bathroom renovations, our clients are gravitating toward an emerging trend of incorporating ledges into a shower or tub area instead of a niche. Not only are ledges beautiful, but they also provide the functionality necessary to hold soap, shampoo, conditioner and other bath products. Practicality is another reason we have been recommending ledges instead of niches. A niche needs to be between two wall studs, and it needs to be tiled and finished on the edges. Ledges require less construction time, which translates to lower cost.
Kitchen Remodeling Design Trends
The most popular layout among U.S. homeowners undertaking a kitchen renovation is L-shaped, according to a recent Houzz.com survey. Nearly 50 percent of homeowners changed or plan to change the layout of the kitchen as part of their remodeling plan. U-shaped kitchens were the second most popular layout, followed by a galley layout.
