WHEN HOME REMODELING GOES AWRY

WHEN HOME REMODELING GOES AWRY

Did you know that 96 percent of contractors go out of business in the first 5 years according to Qualified Remodeler Magazine? And 50 percent of those operations are actually out of business in the first 2 years? No wonder we’ve all heard of the remodeling horror stories.

Seapointe_22 Now this might be something you’ve experienced or something you’ve only heard about, but these nightmare occurrences do happen. Regularly and frequently. It’s the reason you need to do your homework and determine what company is going to work best for your needs. When searching for a residential contractor you should look into a firm’s reputation, longevity, licenses, insurance and labor resources.

Reputation: If you’ve remodeled before, you know that construction can have its hiccups. But its how your contractor handles them and communicates issues to you, so ask for referrals. Reach out to the company’s past clients and listen how their experience was. Did the project finish on-time? Did the working crews keep your home clean throughout the process? Was the staff professional and friendly? Once you start construction you’re at the mercy of your contractor, so make sure you trust the people on your project and in your home.

Longevity: It’s an unfortunate fact, but 96 percent of contractors do close up shop in the first five years of business. It may not seem like a huge deal to you as a homeowner, but it should. What happens when you have an issue with your remodel in three years? Who’s going to come fix it? Warranties should be considered an important factor in determining who you want to work with. California only requires contractors to give clients a one year warranty on their work – here at Sea Pointe we offer a five year warranty. We can do this because we believe in our work and after 28 years in business we stand behind every project we produce.

Licenses: There are about 300,000 licenses contractors in the state of California in 43 different licensing classifications. Do you really want a plumbing contractor touching your electrical panel? In the fiscal year 2012-2013 the California State License Board helped recover nearly $44 million in ordered restitution for consumers – that’s $44 million dollars’ worth of mistakes made by contractors that were not properly licensed. Make sure the contractors you have working in your home are licensed by checking at www.cslb.ca.gov.

Insurance: Asking your potential contractor what type of insurance they carry should be considered a requirement. If they don’t have liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance and something happens on your jobsite, guess who will be responsible? You. Your regular homeowners insurance will more than likely not cover construction incidents. Protect yourself, but asking your contractor the right questions.

001 web

Labor Resources: If you could save $1,000 on your kitchen remodel, but it would take 6 months to build it, would you do it? You would probably end up spending that amount of money in take-out food during the process! It’s critical that you make sure your contractor has the support staff needed to make sure the scheduling of your project is as smooth as possible and the length of time that you are in construction is as minimal as possible. If your contractor is working with sub-contractors, make sure each sub-contractor is vetted with supporting insurance, appropriate licenses and referrals.

Home remodeling is a huge investment. Spend some time upfront to make sure you’re working with a reliable and reputable contractor. Whether it’s a Design/Build firm like Sea Pointe Design & Remodel, or a general contractor, let us know if we can help answer any questions for you to help figure out what fit will be the best for you, your family and your home.

THE LETTERS BEHIND THE NAME

THE LETTERS BEHIND THE NAME

Responsible homeowners like the idea that the people they hire to work inside their homes are experts. They’re not going to be taking any short cuts when it comes to the safety and quality of workmanship in the family home. Another reason is that when potential buyers are looking for a new home to purchase in Orange County, they’ll want to be assured of the dependability and reliability of the home improvement projects previously made to the property purchased.

How can you be sure of that high level of professionalism? What assurances do you have that the workmanship is up to the highest standards? Don’t be fooled with the C.R. upgrades of a new bathroom or a new kitchen unless it can be certifiably well-built. You should be hiring full-time, licensed, certified professional remodelers with years of experience and training.  Professional certification is a great way to reassure you that the professionals your working with are constantly continuing their education and staying-up on the latest building codes and technologies.  Here are some certifications you can look for when hiring a remodeling contractor to renovate your home:

C.K.B.R.

C.R.

C.R.P.M.

C.A.P.S.

But what are all these letters here about? What do they mean?

There are three main organizations in the remodeling industry that offer certification programs.  The largest of these organizations is The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), and for more than 30 years, it’s been in the lead for certification in the industry providing outstanding educational programs.  NARI educates their members and subsequently offers annual certifications, among others, to remodelers who commit their time and resources to fully educating themselves.  They offer many certifications including:

–          Green Certified Professional (GCP)

–          Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler (CKBR)

–          Certified Remodeler (CR)

Their website explains:

“NARI’s certificate program offers this assurance through its extensive screening and testing process. Only full-time, professional remodeling contractors are eligible for certification by NARI. You can be assured that any time you hire a NARI certified remodeling contractor, you are hiring an individual who has made a strong commitment to the professionalism of the remodeling industry and to his or her business. And because remodelers are not eligible for certification until they have been actively involved in the remodeling industry for at least five years, you know that the NARI certified remodeling professional you hire has had a number of years to develop the experience and skills that can only be gained through extensive hands-on practice. Read more here.

“All NARI certified remodeling professionals must participate in a combination of continuing education, association activities, community service, and/or other industry related activities to be eligible for annual recertification. These requirements, while not difficult to achieve, strengthen the individual’s skills as well as the overall reputation and meaning of NARI certification. Read more here.

Another organization is The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). They are at the forefront for the strengthening of the health and safety criteria found in our housing laws. The NAHB Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) is the building industry’s designation that a professional has been educated about the laws regarding safety and remodeling in the home, specifically educating them of the needs of seniors. In addition, CAPS certification proves that the professional receives extensive up-to-date education about how to make home improvements for people with disabilities or those elders that want to stay in their home as long as possible.  The association also offers additional certifications such as:

–          Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)

–          Certified Green Professional (CGP)

–          Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCO)

The third organization is The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).  Their certificate programs offer a way for professionals to enhance their careers and provide value added services to their clients.  They offer different levels of certificates such as:

–          Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD)

–          Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) & Certified Bath Designer (CBD)

–          Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer

Deciding to remodel your home is a huge step which brings much satisfaction when accomplished by an excellent residential home contractor. Deciding who gets the job is key. Outside of buying your home, it may be the single biggest investment you make. You must make the best decision you can and you need to know that the remodeling contractor you choose is a full-time, dedicated specialist. By annually certifying the remodelers who successfully complete rigorous, ongoing extensive education, the industry knows that property owners all over the country will receive reliable work. Certification gives you, the homeowner, the best protection and assurance you can get. This is good for business and good for you.

KITCHEN REMODELS FROM SANTA?

KITCHEN REMODELS FROM SANTA?

Kitchen RemodelingIn the mist of the holiday season, may we suggest starting your gift list for Santa with the words: “Dream Kitchen”? Wouldn’t that be the best gift ever? Many of our clients come to in the new year after another frustrating holiday season.  After entertaining friends and family in an outdated kitchen, many clients come to us in the new year because they’ve spend another frustrating holiday season in a kitchen lacking an open floor plan, counter space, and is really just an eye sore.

Have you been feeling that you need to do something to help your kitchen out? Does it scream of inefficiency and confusion? Are the cabinets ancient? Have your counters seen better days? Having a customized kitchen that you create yourself that’s specific to what you need is one of the most desirable things to have in your home. No doubt: A new, updated kitchen not only looks like a million bucks, it can increase your property value when you’re ready to sell it as well. And the best part of that is the realization that a kitchen remodel, done by a competent and reliable residential contractor that specializes in kitchen remodeling, would be accomplished with any size budget.

Now that winter is coming, this is the season for warmth and merriment. We want to bring families, friends, and co-workers into our homes to enjoy each other’s company. People tend to come into your kitchen to enjoy the whole cooking experience with you and we want to make that experience easier for all of us. Sharing stories in the kitchen are some of the better memories to make at a party in your house.  A kitchen built for gatherings is a great thing and your guests will remember the time spent at your home in a wonderful light.

Many of the older homes have kitchens that were designed differently since people didn’t gravitate to the kitchen in those days. Design flaws galore, by today’s standards. Nowadays it is so much fun to chat in the kitchen area as we watch the finishing touches being put to our favorite dishes. We need kitchens that work in today’s world, with sinks, appliances, cabinets, drawers and counters all located just how you want them. Social time and conversations are considered priorities so our kitchens should reflect that.

What better way to celebrate the end of a year than to get a new kitchen? You’ve always wanted a renovated kitchen to suit your tastes and now’s a good time to start planning for one. And the gift list for Santa to ponder could have your Dream Kitchen right on the top of it…Ho-Ho-Ho…hope you’ve been good this year!

SHADES OF WHITE

SHADES OF WHITE

Repainting is the least expensive of your home remodeling projects but it’s also incredibly key since colors are so important in setting the mood. Colors can relax your mind, making your moments sweeter. It’s as simple as what colors your eyes see in your home environment that can affect you emotionally. Colors you surround yourself with can make you feel passionate or mellow, stimulated or subdued. Warm colors fall around the colors found in the flames of fire–yellows, oranges, reds and the indigos. These warmer colors are helpful in making you feel stronger with more energy. Cool colors are anything like the refreshing tones found in bodies of water, the greens and the blues. The cooler colors seem to bring your attention to your breath, to your calmness and your serenity. Somehow greens and blues help you to feel peaceful.

White Bath2Then there are the variations of each color found on the spectrum, the tints, textures and depths of the hues displayed at every paint store. And all this talk about color leads to the discussion of white the color white is actually not a color. By definition, white is the absence of color. There’s a feeling of coldness to a white wall, as empty as a thick blanket of snow enveloping a barren hill. Zero warmth, an emotional hardness, as there are no dimensions to white. White is white.

Yet having said that, there are seemingly infinite shades and hues of white. Differences in white are created by colorists who try to modify white paint with drops of intense, pure colors greens, yellows, reds, browns, blues, and every tint in between. Choices of white care numerous. You can buy a tinted white paint for every taste, style and need.

One common use of white paint is for trims and ceilings. You often see white trim on both interior and exterior moldings around your windows, doors, floor, and ceiling. For a polished look, give adequate time and consideration while selecting which tinted white to use to best complement the other wall colors.

The easy way to choose color combinations is to ask for expert help from a design specialist who’s part of a good residential contracting team. That specialist will understand colors’ effects on moods and will help you select the color of your interior walls, depending on what the room’s size and purpose is. A designer specializing in color selections will be able to see the slight variations immediately and you’ll be confident that the colors you put up complement each other perfectly.

White KitchenDon’t despair if you can’t choose the right combination of colors since an experienced remodeling contracting company will help you select that perfect color to finish your home renovation project. With professional help, giving your color selection careful thought and consideration, you’ll captivate that specific mood that’s desired for that particular room’s purpose. Remember to be confident using color selection to your advantage while finishing your home remodeling project. Have fun with it and you know you’ve succeeded when it puts a smile on your face. You deserve that much.

SUDDENLY SERENE: FROM CHAOS TO FENG SHUI SUCCESS

Keeping clutter to a minimum is not as easy as it should be. Wouldn’t you feel relaxed without having stuff all over the place? Even if you have it all neatly stacked in littlepiles and you very well may know how to find that certain piece of paper when you need it. But really, just looking at the to-do pile(s) gives you grief and makes your finest procrastination skills come to the fore.

With the ancient Chinese art of feng shui (pronounced fung-shway) it’s taught that all things carry a life force, chi. Chi is energy and the placement of things in your environment can either help or hinder your potential in life. Wise words have been written about feng shui and speaking to an expert in the field would be beneficial when embarking on that home remodeling project that you have in mind. It would be ideal to work with a contractor who specializes in residential contracting and who has a team of designers with extensive experience in working along with the concepts inherent in feng shui.

When speaking specifically about clutter in your home, feng shui speaks to the necessity to rid your home environment of it and not to just hide it away. Clutter is bad. Period. It’s best to go through your items at least once per year and give some things away that you aren’t using in order for others to benefit.A win-win if ever there was one. You get a tax-deductible donation receipt reducing your income taxes and a worthwhile charity gets usable items that go towards helping others who actually could use or sell the items. You feel good because you’re acting generously by giving material items away to enrich others’ lives. You’re being kind by helping others but another plus is that you’re going to feel better just by not having so much stuff laying around your home. You’ll just keep what you need.

And as for the items left in plain sight? How about installing some new closets to that bare wall in your garage or your spare room? Some nicely designed custom cabinetry would make your things so much easier to get to and to use. With more storage space, which is easily designed and installed by a remodeling contractor, your house would be a nicer place to come home to.

This brings us back to the feng shui part: your family’s life force will be strengthened by reducing clutter in your home. The chi will be allowed to flow easily through your home which gives you more freedom and allows more positive vibrations within your being. Don’t take my word for it. Try it. Attack those closets and those corners where things are stacking up. Aesthetically speaking, you’ll end up smiling because what you see will be empty corners in your lovely home¦not stacks of boxes highlighting what you need to do. You’ll have more counter space and more room in your cupboards. Your closets and floors will be cleaner and you’ll breathe easier knowing that you have less stuff hanging around that actively saps your energy.

Consider this: you’d be in better control of your life if you could somehow reduce the amount of things you have laying around and, in the process, make more room for storage of your needed items. Additions to your home to organize your stored items are absolutely needed. With more closet spaces to tuck your valuable things away you’d clearly feel relieved, which means you’d be more productive. Your energy would be heightened and life would be better. What’s the cost of adding more storage spaces to your home? A few bucks? And then feeling serene? Priceless.
