When Is It Time to Remodel?

When Is It Time to Remodel?

When life changes, you need to adapt. Knowing the perfect moments for change can be challenging. You might have been putting off remodeling, but here are events that call for a revision to your home.

When Is It Time to Remodel? | Sea Pointe Design & Remodel

When a Baby is on the Way

Is your family going to grow? Perhaps you have a decent sized home, but have not felt the need to convert your cluttered spare bedroom into a living space… Once a baby is one the way, it’s time! Babies need their own nurseries, and timing for constructing one is important. Plan for the remodel in the early months of pregnancy, so you are not overwhelmed when it is crunch time later on.

When your Child is Going Off to College

Have you always wanted a guest room? There is no better time to make this happen than when one of your own leaves the nest to flock off to college. Transform your child’s old room into a lovely guest room for grandparents, aunt/uncles, or friends to stay when they visit. If your master bedroom shares a wall with a soon to be empty room, perhaps you want to knock it down and expand your space. Give yourself that bigger bathroom you have always imagined or that massive walk in closet.

When you Plan on Selling your Home

A perfect time to remodel is when you are planning to sell your home. While changing things up right before you leave might seem counterintuitive, the benefits will be obvious once you get prospective buyers. Sure, a remodel will cost you, but a successful remodel adds value to your home. If you redo a bathroom or kitchen before placing your home on the market, you can expect potential buyers to be willing to pay more, since they won’t be inheriting any fix-it projects.

When High Costs are Breaking your Bank

Are you spending too much on AC, heating, and energy bills? It is probably because your home built in the sixties is not as well insulated as newer homes are, (and not to mention, your unit is outdated). The more conducive your home is to saving energy, the cheaper it will be to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

When your Income or Savings has Increased

“Sweetie, I just got a raise!” Any increase in income is a joyous time for homeowners because owning and maintaining a home is so costly. Homes require maintenance. Each year homeowners should apply the 1% Rule: this rule of thumb tells you to spend 1% of your purchased cost back into your home every year. Small things like painting the interior and exterior are often forgotten because it is not as immediately important as fixing something that is broken. When you save a little extra cash, you are afforded the luxury to make some home improvements.

If you find yourself at any of these points in life, you might consider a remodel of some kind. Whether it be a revamped kitchen, an addition, or simple home maintenance, call us to get your remodel started as soon as possible. We want to make your wants, needs, and desires for your perfect home, a reality.

What Material Should I Use for My Kitchen Floors?

What Material Should I Use for My Kitchen Floors?

What Material Should I Use for My Kitchen Floors?
Ponder the question: what is the foundation of any great kitchen? Is it the custom cabinets, or perhaps the window treatments? Maybe even the countertop or backsplash? While those things are important, the material you choose for your kitchen floors is pivotal in creating just the right atmosphere. Additionally, your initial choice of flooring is key if you want your kitchen’s appearance to be kept up over a long period of time.

There are many flooring options available for kitchens that represent a range of styles, durability, and maintenance. When choosing which is best for your own kitchen, you will want to consider your household members, how often you are willing to refinish, and budget. Read on to learn about popular materials for kitchen floors so you can discover which would work best in your own home.

Tile

One common material you will find on many kitchen floors is tile. People choose tile because it is durable and low maintenance. Tile normally requires grouting, although contemporary styles call for thinner grout lines to create the appearance of a larger kitchen. It’s best to acquire professional help when it comes to installing tile, since improper sealing can lead to dirt getting caught between tiles and faster wear and tear. Remember that with tile, anything fragile will shatter when dropped and the material feels hard underfoot. Also consider when choosing what type of tile you prefer that certain texture can make it harder to clean.

Engineered Wood

Many people desire the warmth that hardwood floors bring to a kitchen. However, wood can be finicky in terms of the kitchen environment—spills, heat, and heavy foot traffic are all factors that make taking care of wood a little more high maintenance. Opt for engineered wood, which is made up of multiple layers of plywood and/or white wood with a veneer as the top layer. Engineered wood is more water resilient and normally comes pre-finished. Clean up is easy with occasional mopping and sweeping up dirt.

Vinyl

While vinyl might conjure up images of checkered and kitschy floors, that is no longer always the case. Vinyl can now mimic the look of other materials like stone or hardwood, but is a much more economical option as well as easier to clean or patch if damaged. The scratch, stain and fade resistant surface makes this a durable and low maintenance option that can be installed over most flat surfaces. A couple things to consider is that vinyl has the tendency to bubble or peel after a while.

Cork

The use of cork is a growing trend due to its sustainability, resilience, and soft feel when standing on it. Cork also has the power to reduce energy bills, as it naturally insulates a room. The material is resistant to water, heat and mold making it ideal for the kitchen environment. Just wipe up dirt or spills immediately, and reseal regularly for proper upkeep. Cork is another flooring that can be installed over most flat surfaces.

Concrete

In homes with a contemporary feel, concrete floors have been prevalent in creating an industrial chic vibe. Concrete is virtually indestructible, a cinch to clean, and great for high traffic areas like the kitchen. It can be left as is, or dyed to customize the look. It’s also a good foundation for any other surface if you choose to switch things up further down the road.

Laminate

Finally, laminate is another economical option that has the power to mimic more expensive materials like tile or wood. Because of the layered construction, it holds up against scratches well. Proper installation will help laminate last longer, since when the top layer wears away, it should be replaced.

5 Bathroom Upgrades You Never Knew You Wanted

5 Bathroom Upgrades You Never Knew You Wanted

The bathroom might just be the most underrated room of the home. Many of them are designed to be functional– we do not particularly think of it as a place where we enjoy spending time. What if we told you that a few structural updates could drastically impact the way you think about and use your bathroom? A handful of design elements can make your time spent in the loo more convenient, relaxing, and worthwhile.

1. Shower Niche
A cluttered shower means a cluttered mind. Bottles are prone to toppling into the tub when perched on the slippery, often curved edges. Trying to balance your products on precarious pole caddies can be annoying and unreliable. Building a niche, or a recessed shelving area, in your shower can save space while keeping all of your favorite products stored compactly. Tucked away from the water stream, they are less likely to get wet and slippery when placed inside a niche, as well. Break it up with shelves to store double the products.

2. Shower Seat
Some people are “bath people,” some people are “shower people,” but just because you prefer showers, does not mean you can’t take the time to have a seat and relax! Building a shower seat or bench inside the tub can turn your routine showers into spa like experience. Enjoy the water or turn the showerhead away to use the steam like a sauna.

3. Wide Bathtub Lips
Okay, so you are a bath person—there’s nothing wrong with that! What makes a bath more enjoyable than the lights turned down low, scented candles around the tub, and maybe even a good book? Wide tub lips will make perching items on the edge much easier and without risk of falling in and getting soaked.

4. Submerged Tub
Now this is just plain cool. Instead of your tub having walls that come up from the floor, submerge the tub into your floor for easy entry and less splashes. Stairs within the tub will help you get in and out smoothly, and without having to step over a tall bath wall.

5. Secluded Toilet
This is one of the most practical design elements you can implement into your bathroom. If you’re living with someone else, or perhaps you have a family, getting ready in the mornings can be difficult with everyone fighting for the bathroom. Secluding a toilet behind a door separately from the sink and shower area can let family members take care of their morning business simultaneously. You will be less rushed, and more likely to enjoy yourself while you leisurely prepare to take on the day.

To talk about adding these elements, or any other design ideas you have, to your own home, call Sea Pointe Design & Remodel for a free consultation or stop by our showroom to talk to one of our design experts.

Closet Designs for an Organized 2015

For many, a new year means a fresh start… but it can be difficult to practice what you preach with last year’s clutter laying around. If you are ready for a small change to your home that will make a big impact, consider remodeling your closets. Whether you have a lot of space to work with, or what most would consider a cubby, optimizing your storage space will lead to a cleaner and happy home. Check out these closet design ideas that will transform your closet and clear clutter.

Tiered racks
If the width of your closet is limiting, consider adding a second tier to hanging racks. By moving the top rack high enough to add a second one below it, you will have room for double the garments without having to knock down any walls. You can also reserve a bottom rack for hanging pants. Instead of one long rod, install multiple shorter rods that pants can be folded over and hung from. These will cut down on hangers needed, and reduce creases caused by keeping pants folded.

Shelving
Instead of purchasing large and bulky dressers, opt for installing custom shelves into your closet. Open shelving helps you keep your folded clothes organized since you can see everything at once—no need for rummaging and refolding. If you’re a big shoe fanatic, shoe shelves that display each pair will be like shopping your own private store every morning!

Take it one step further by allowing the shelves to be interchangeable, so that you can place them higher or lower depending on your organization needs. Place shelves with out-of-season clothes higher, leaving more room for what you’ll be wearing more regularly.

Cabinets
Small cabinets can come in handy for items you want tucked out of sight, like undergarments or valuables. These can be tricky to implement, since pull out doors will have to be measured and installed precisely. Sea Pointe Design & Remodel can help install built-in custom cabinets that look seamless with the rest of your closet and fit well.

New Doors
Many standard homes come with closets that have sliding doors. While these help preserve floor space, they can also lead to the annoying dilemma of the closet “blind spot”… the section in the middle that seems to stay tucked away, no matter which door you slide. You’re left keeping your closet under-stocked so that you can push all of the clothes to one side or the other. Do yourself a favor and install folding or swing out closet doors. The small sacrifice in floor space (to ensure a clear doorway opening) will be worth being able to take advantage of your entire closet. Contemporary designs have even removed closet doors altogether, letting clothes display as part of the room’s design. If you trust yourself to keep everything in its place, this would be a great way to show off your custom closets.

Remodeling your closets will help you get a head start on spring cleaning, not to mention add a small bump in value to a home. Let Sea Pointe Design & Remodel take care of your wardrobe’s home; talk to one of our design specialists today!

Home Remodeling Projects to Start During Winter

Home Remodeling Projects to Start During Winter

Here in sunny Southern California, we are lucky enough to not have to worry about elements such as snow to make our winters harsh. This makes our job as Orange County home renovators a little bit easier, since we are not slaves to the weather in terms of what construction projects we take on. Plus, there are a number of home maintenance and remodeling projects that are best done during the chilly months. Whether it’s the weather that makes them ideal, or the comfort they add to your home, these projects are perfect for starting during winter.

Home Remodeling Projects to Start During Winter | Sea Pointe Design & Remodel Blog

Insulation and Weatherization

Winter is a great time to increase the insulation in your attic. This will help regulate your home’s temperatures, leading to lower heating bills (and air conditioning bills once the weather starts warming up again). Taking care of cracks and misalignment between doors, windows, and their frame will also help to prevent heat escaping your home and keep the cold elements out.

Switch Up Your Floors

Winter is an especially good season to install hard wood floors, because the cool temperature and lack of humidity prevents materials from gapping or water damage. The winter air also helps the adhesive to dry more quickly so you can enjoy the installation sooner. New and well-maintained flooring also helps with better insulation. Alternatively, putting in new carpet can create a cozy atmosphere to an otherwise standard room.

Lighting

Since the days are typically darker, and nighttime comes sooner in winter, this is an ideal time to add more lighting to your home. Perhaps you have always wanted to install recessed lighting, or you are ready to add a large statement chandelier. Whether you are swapping out old fixtures for new ones, or adding some where there were none before, this will literally brighten up your living space and lend for a more enjoyable indoor area.

Basement Remodeling

Since many basements do not have temperature control, trying to work on them during the hotter months can be excruciating. Reserve basement remodeling for the wintertime when it’s a bit more bearable. Since all the work is underground, your home (and workers) will not be exposed to any elements that might slow down a job.

Painting

Giving your home a new paint job can brighten up your indoor space when it seems so dull and dreary outside. Painting can be a fun activity on your own or with your family to beat cabin fever (or get your kids off of their tablets!). Consider light, warm colors that will put you in the mood for spring’s arrival.

Doing small remodeling jobs around the house can make winter exciting, and prepare you for a fresh new year. Sea Pointe Design & Remodel can help with your design and build remodeling in Orange County and surrounding Southern California cities. Let us help you end your year with a new beginning for your home and family.
