The Perfect Kitchen Remodel – Your Guide To Design

The Perfect Kitchen Remodel – Your Guide To Design

Perfect Kitchen RemodelWhen designing your kitchen, it’s important to consider who will be using the space and for what purposes. Many of our clients want to make their new kitchens kid friendly. For clients with younger children who will be active users of the kitchen we often recommend the following:

  • Most of the storage below counter height
  • Pull out drawers inside of base cabinets
  • Undercounter refrigerators and beverage centers
  • Undercounter microwave
  • Accessible pantries
  • Islands that double as places for homework or a separate island that is out of the way from cooking
  • Racks for dishes
  • Breakfast areas
  • Outlet charging stations in base cabinet drawers
  • Space to store small appliances under countertops such as toasters, blenders and other portable appliances
  • Built-in cutting boards to help prevent the possibility of damaging countertops
  • Touch open cabinets and drawers
  • Soft close drawers and cabinets
  • Seating with washable fabrics
  • Extra wide countertops because we know kids will often climb on the countertop
  • Countertops without overhangs because overhangs make it difficult for smaller children to reach the surface
  • Designated play areas in or off the kitchen (space permitting)
  • A separate dining area and table just for kids
  • Built-in shelves to store games, art supplies, books and other kid-centric items
  • Separate dishes, cutlery and cookware just for kids

Many of the recommendations we make with children in mind will work equally as well for adults. Plus, improving your kitchen provides the highest return on investment when you sell your home compared to other upgrades, according to a 2017 National Association of Realtors survey. Almost 50 percent of survey respondents said the primary reason for renovating their kitchen was improved functionality. Nine in 10 survey respondents said that their kitchen renovation made them happier in their home. That’s priceless.

What Makes a Kitchen Contemporary?

What Makes a Kitchen Contemporary?

Contemporary KitchenModern and contemporary kitchen motifs are hot right now. Our clients are gravitating toward more open, clutter-free, minimalist spaces with clean lines. The clean look is devoid of curves and is more linear in its look and feel.

Today’s Contemporary Kitchen

Modern contemporary kitchens celebrate natural materials, whether they are stone, quartz or solid wood cabinetry. Contemporary motifs often feature frameless cabinets that offer smooth surfaces. The tile we specify for a contemporary kitchen is also straightforward with sharp, clean edges.

This same approach is taken when we suggest countertops for a contemporary kitchen. Quartz is extremely popular because of its clean look.

Kitchen Design

A well-designed kitchen is an organized kitchen. We often propose special storage compartments in drawers and cabinets, which allows countertops to remain clutter free.

It’s easy to add that wow factor to a contemporary kitchen by contrasting cabinet colors and materials with countertops and backsplashes as well floor and wall coverings. Imagine gray wall cabinets with white base cabinets.

In contemporary kitchens, opposites attract. That’s why we don’t subscribe to limiting color palettes for our clients who want a contemporary look. What’s more important, is how the color selected will contrast and complement with other materials in the kitchen.

Contemporary Fixtures

In keeping with the contemporary design, lighting fixtures tend to be minimalist and offer clean, uncluttered lines.
Less is typically more in a contemporary kitchen design. Open floor plans, expansive floor and countertop space and abundant natural light are hallmarks of contemporary kitchen design.

For faucets, cabinet and door hardware and other fixtures, we recommend polished chrome finishes. Chrome is timeless and easy to clean.

Residential Remodeling Survival Guide

Residential Remodeling Survival Guide

home remodelingHow-to Avoid Stress and Confusion

We’ve all heard the remodeling horror stories, right? From the “my contractor tore out my kitchen then disappeared for two weeks!” to the “there is dust everywhere!”; our team of specialists at Sea Pointe Design & Remodel are well aware of such residential remodeling mishaps and employ strategic processes to avoid them. Below are a few of Sea Pointe Design & Remodel’s go-to tips for getting our clients through a residential remodel, no matter how big or small.

First and foremost, know what you’re getting into.

One of the greatest services we can provide to our clients is setting realistic expectations. The general contractor is responsible for clearly communicating the construction aspect of a residential remodel. Talking through the nitty-gritty during the planning process will save the homeowner copious amounts of stress and confusion throughout their remodeling project. Similarly, it’s important for the homeowner to communicate any concerns surrounding the project before construction begins. Traditionally, homeowners are concerned for the safety of small pets or children and the security of their home during construction. Safety is always key, but raising concerns like these before starting a residential remodel will give the homeowner and their general contractor the chance to set a specific plan-of-action.

Replacement Spaces

Commonly completed by the Sea Pointe Design & Remodel team, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the apple of every homeowner’s eye. Seeing as these areas of the home are considered “high traffic” and are essential to everyday life, it is important for homeowners to designate substitution areas where the normal functions of these rooms can be carried out. For a homeowner, demo-day can be one of the most exciting remodeling milestones. However, this excitement should never be followed by the stress of realizing that you have no place to cook dinner for the next 6 to 8 weeks! Communicating how practical the use of a space will be during an upcoming remodeling project is the responsibility of the general contractor, allowing the homeowner to plan accordingly.

Take steps to control the dust.

Unanimously, dust is the largest nuisance and one of the hardest things to control during a remodel. If, after having a conversation with your general contractor, it is decided that living in your home during construction is a practical and safe option, there are a few strategies for dust control. Sea Pointe Design & Remodel offers a state-of-the-art HEPA filter to those clients with dust concerns. This filter has an “always on” feature which allows for air purification when necessary. In other words, this filter is working to control the dust in our clients’ homes 24/7, not just during construction hours. Upon agreement from our clients, adding this air-filtration system to a jobsite can make all the difference for those clients with asthma or dust sensitivities.

Last but not least, remember the big picture.

Residential remodeling is not a perfect science, and no matter the level of preplanning, an unforeseen bump in your residential remodel project may arise. The best thing to keep in mind during a potentially stressful time is just how amazing your end result will be. Soon enough, you will be so busy enjoying your beautiful new space and the path that led you there will have been worthwhile. Customizing the aesthetic and functionality of your home is an amazing opportunity, and, when working with a credible, knowledgeable and trustworthy team, remodeling can be an amazing experience.

Open Shelving

Kitchen decorative accents

When designing a kitchen, open shelving provides numerous options. It’s functional, providing storage and organization to a kitchen. It contributes to the look and feel of the room, allowing our clients to express their personality by showcasing works of art, pottery, collectables, cookware, chinaware, glasses, plants, flowers, herbs and objects d’art.

Living Walls

Living walls create an art piece from sustainable vertical gardens indoors and outside as well. In relation to kitchen design, you can install living walls that do not require watering, natural light, fertilizer or pruning. In addition to being exceptionally cool and visually stunning, vertical gardens help absorb sound, preventing conversations and acoustics from the kitchen from traveling to other rooms in the home.

2018 Kitchen Trends: Lighting Guide

Innovative Lighting

kitchen lighting guide

Lighting sets the mood for any space and it certainly has come a long way in the kitchen. One of the hottest kitchen trends is integrated LED lighting in, above and below cabinets and drawers. Perched above cabinets, as well as hidden inside and under them, integrated kitchen lighting adds atmosphere, functionality and style to a kitchen. They’re a brilliant way to complete the look of your kitchen and get a better look at what you’re making for dinner.

Under cabinet lighting makes tasks easier and safer by delivering directed light to a specific area. Under cabinet lighting can provide task lighting for countertop food preparation and accent lighting to highlight countertops and backsplashes. Under cabinet lighting also helps to eliminate shadows, making it easier to prepare meals. Additionally, under cabinet lighting helps to create unique looks by adding another layer of light and it’s extremely affordable.

Integrated cabinet lighting can showpiece dinnerware, collectables and objects d’art. Integrated cabinet and drawer lighting also makes organizing and finding what you are looking for much easier, not to mention the wow factor that is achieved every time you open a drawer or door and the interior of the space is illuminated.
