How to Maximize Small Spaces

How to Maximize Small Spaces

Remodeling Design Guide

How to Maximize Small SpacesKitchens are not as large as they once were. The kitchen and home footprint are contracting as a rule and open floor plans are becoming the norm. We love to design open floor plan kitchens, but an open floor often means losing a wall of cabinets, which makes it a challenge to provide ample storage. We love challenges!

When space is an issue, our first thoughts are to ensure that the finished product is both functional and aesthetically wowing. For functionality, we envision an imaginary straight line drawn from the center of the sink, to the center of the cooktop, to the center of the refrigerator and finally back to the sink. In the trade, this is referred to as the work triangle. As a rule of thumb, no leg of the triangle should be less than 4 feet or more than 9 feet. Concurrent in configuring the best triangle, we also think about  kitchen storage solutions.

Islands are enormously popular with our clients, but they are not always the best solution, especially if space is limited, because they can make it difficult to maneuver in the space. Alternatives to islands include u-shaped designs or peninsulas to provide both storage and countertop space. We also use multitasking principles and products to maximize the effectiveness of the kitchen when space is at a premium. This can be accomplished by:

  1. Keeping countertops at seat height instead of bar stool height, which enables the countertop to serve dual purposes of a dining area and work area
  2. Specifying appliances that serve dual roles such as refrigerators that have the ability to convert between fridge and freezer or combination ovens that can function as a convection, conventional and speed
  3. Creating bar areas that can be used for organization and entertaining
  4. Specifying multifunctional islands that serve as dining and work areas
  5. Installing pullout pantries or cabinets that serve as pantries
  6. Using nonstandard sized cabinets
  7. Extending cabinets to the ceiling and countertops
  8. Hanging pot racks from the ceiling
  9. Taking advantage of in-cabinet storage solutions such as vertical tray dividers, roll out shelves and trays
  10. Specifying smaller or alternative appliances, e.g., columnar refrigerators or refrigerator or a speed oven in lieu of microwave

Don’t believe that a small space can’t make for a great, functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen. Let us show you how!

Kitchen Remodel Guide: Professional Design Details

Kitchen Remodel Guide: Professional Design Details

Kitchen Remodel Design DetailsSmall details can create extraordinary value in the design of a new kitchen or bath. When we meet with homeowners we want to know how they currently use their kitchen. We want to know if they entertain frequently, host family gatherings or cook regularly. We learn the style of furnishings, accessories, flooring and wall covers throughout the home to determine clients’ preferences. We gather as much information as we can to help us exceed our clients’ expectations.

When we design a kitchen we divide the space into areas for food preparation, clean up, and if there is sufficient room, dining. Many of our clients want an island. They are great for food preparation, can double as a dining table and often serve as the focal point of a new kitchen.

For our clients who entertain frequently we recommend placing a prep-sink in an island. The main sink, used for cleanup, should be placed in another location to prevent dirty pots, pans and dishes from piling up on the island. The location of the sink on the island depends on the island’s size. If the island is less than nine feet, we typically will place the sink at one end of the island to maximize the space for food preparation. Island sinks also need to account for the height of the faucet. The taller the faucet is, the more prevalent it becomes.

We create clean lines for contemporary kitchens by specifying panels for the dishwasher and refrigerator, locating the microwave either in a hidden cabinet or as a cut out in a base cabinet and specify pop up outlets that disappear into the countertop. Pop-ups also represent a great solution in areas where there are no wall cabinets to hide the plug molding strip.

If our clients tell us that a coffee maker, toaster or other small appliance will sit on a countertop, we locate an electrical outlet behind it. This helps to hide the electrical cord.

To create consistency of image, we will coordinate the colors of wall outlets and plug molding to complement the backsplash.

Lighting can make or break a space. Under-cabinet lighting illuminates the countertop making it easier to prep and cook meals. This is achieved by locating the light at the front of the cabinet. If the light is placed at the back of the cabinet, it will illuminate the backsplash instead.

LED lighting has made it easier to consistently illuminate cabinets. Placing LED strips on both sides of a cabinet will illuminate each shelf. On a framed cabinet, we place the strip behind the cabinet’s face frame. On frameless cabinets, the LED light strip is placed in a prepared groove on the sidewall of the cabinet. In both cases, the strip is hidden.

Other significant details that make a new kitchen more enjoyable include a divider in deeper base cabinets for pot lid storage, adding soap dispensers and an air switch to provide a clean look for counters and backsplashes and even countersinking the screw on a Lazy Susan cabinet to prevent a bi-fold door from scratching an adjacent cabinet.

Kitchens and baths are the most used rooms in a home. When a client partners with our showroom to create their dream space, we understand that the little details – often never considered – make all the difference.

Perfect Bathroom Remodel – Design Guide

Perfect Bathroom Remodel – Design Guide

A well designed bathroom is an organized bathroom

Because bathroom space is often limited, there is a greater premium on organizational tools that make using the bath easier and more enjoyable. In master and secondary baths and even powder rooms, the vanity or sink stand often does the heavy lifting for storage, and thanks to recent innovations, storage options have increased significantly.

When storage space is at a premium, vanities with open shelves create storage space for towels and baskets around drains, traps and other plumbing components. Open shelving is an extremely attractive option that can provide a visual focal point.

Shelves and roll out drawers maximize the space under and around plumbing in vanities with doors. Roll out drawers can hold baskets or be equipped with dividers for cosmetics, curling irons, hair dryers, etc. Many vanity manufacturers offer drawers and shelves with notches in them that help to minimize loss of storage space caused by piping that flows through the vanity to the sink and faucets. The vanity also can be wired for electricity or used as a cell phone or tablet charging station.

When it comes to vanity drawers, keep in mind that the depth impacts storage. Shallow drawers help to work around the sink’s plumbing and can be used to store makeup, shaving tools, tweezers, brushes, etc. While shallow drawers may be great for storing small things, they don’t offer the functionality needed for storing larger items. One possible solution is to specify a double drawer to double the depth. The exterior is fitted with two pulls to provide a consistency of look but there is only one drawer.

Kitchen Design Elements in the Bathroom

There are many kitchen storage solutions that can be adapted to the bath. For example, vertical pull outs are commonly used in kitchens for spices and can also be used to effectively store bath items in small slivers of space.

Toe kicks can make space along the floor functional for storing less commonly used items such as back up rolls of toilet tissue. Tip out drawers can be used where the top of the cabinetry meets the countertop. They are useful for storing toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and other small items.

Outfitting drawers and storage space with adjustable compartments, reconfigurable bins, vertical dividers, tool slots and trays provide endless opportunities to get the look and functionality that keep your bath looking fresh and functional.

Laundry Room Remodel – Design Guide

Laundry Room Remodel – Design Guide

How to design a beautiful, but functional laundry room.

laundry room remodelingThe laundry room is often undervalued and underused, and we can re-imagine that space to provide you so much more than just an area to wash dirty clothes.

The laundry room’s storage capabilities are often overlooked. We recently installed gorgeous cherry wood cabinets over the washer and dryer to provide the storage our client needed.

Another client could not believe that we could take a very small space and make it a showpiece in their home. We stacked the washer and dryer, installed a small sink and created a spot for hand-washing clothes. To add pizazz, we specified a stained glass window. Here are other laundry room ideas that move your space from the mundane to the spectacular:

  1. Use cabinets to conceal laundry room clutter.
  2. Use paintings, pictures, photos, collages and sculpture to make a laundry room pop. Remember, artwork is not only for the living room.
  3. Install a dog washing station.
  4. Install a rod in a cabinet to hang clothes — this won’t take up floor space or eliminate cabinets.
  5. Place a countertop over front-loading washers and dryers to create a work area.
  6. Create a playroom inside of the laundry room for kids by installing a long counter for painting, drawing, reading or game playing.
  7. Hide your laundry detergent and other supplies in cabinets above the sink and use decorative baskets underneath for additional storage.
  8. Store front-loading washers and dryers inside of cabinets so when there not in use, they are not visible.
  9. Place large storage racks between the washer and dryer to help keep laundry supplies neatly organized.
  10. Use wall and floor coverings to make distinctive and head-turning design statements – your laundry room can be the envy of the neighborhood.
  11. Wall-to-wall cabinets adds considerable functionality to any laundry room space.
  12. Make a narrow space look larger by using bright colored wall coverings, cabinets or appliances.
