Design and Build Your Dream Home Office

Design and Build Your Dream Home Office

Working from home these last few weeks or months may have you thinking twice about building a home office. Whether you already have a designated workspace, or you’re looking to create a brand new one, we can help make your dream home office a reality.

First, though, let’s take a look at some factors to consider. After all, your workspace should be one that you enjoy spending time in each day, and be an environment that fosters productivity. Just like you would with any other room in your home, take the time to imagine the space and design it according to your own style and taste. For specific ideas, check out our blog 10 Tips For Creating the Perfect Home Office.

Where and how to build your home office

Now that you have an idea of how you want your office to look and feel, it’s time to decide where to put it. Our design-build experts can assist you with this process, but here are some important things to consider:

1. Budget

How much you have or are willing to spend on your home office build will greatly impact the construction. For example, if your budget is tight, you may have to settle for creating an office inside of an already existing space. Add a little more money to the project and you can think about creating or taking down walls and making structural changes. Finally, with a larger budget, imagine adding a whole new room that is a dedicated office.

2. Combine renovation projects

Whether you’re looking to save money or simply looking for efficient home renovations, consider whether or not your home office build can be combined with another project.

For example, are you in the middle of a kitchen remodel design? Many of our clients have discovered that their ideal home office was actually adjacent to, or a nook within, their dream kitchen. This often works well for someone who has a busy family life – they can take care of family needs, such as meal prep, while having their workspace nearby to pay bills, check emails, or make a quick phone call.

3. Determine the best location

Where your home office is located within your home can have a big impact on your successful use of the space. If you anticipate clients meeting you there, for example, it’s not likely that you’d want an office upstairs next to your bedroom. Instead, you would choose an easily accessible room on the first floor that would be out of the way of the rest of the household traffic.

Other than its physical location in relation to the rest of your rooms, consider the lighting. If the only available place to build or create an office is in a dark corner of your house, other measures will need to be taken to ensure you have adequate light for your workspace. Whenever possible, however, it’s helpful to find a space that offers natural light for at least part of the day.

4. Plan ahead

The easiest way to design and build your dream home office is to start with a clean slate. This means that if you’re building a brand new home or undergoing a whole house remodel, you have lots of options and the sky’s the limit! Our designers can help you find and utilize the perfect space within your proposed floor plan and bring your dream office to fruition.

Outdoor Kitchen Design Essentials

Outdoor Kitchen Design Essentials

outdoor kitchen design

Events of the last few months may have you seeking to spend more time outdoors, including having your meals there. After all, eating or prepping meals in an outdoor kitchen can serve multiple purposes these days – you get fresh air, you can enjoy the sunshine, and practice social distancing in your own back yard!

But, what if you don’t already have an outdoor kitchen? The simple answer is … get one! But, before you do, let’s take a look at a few design and installation considerations.

Outside design vs. inside style

When considering an outdoor kitchen, many homeowners question whether they should keep it the same style as their indoor kitchen. Ultimately, the choice is yours but ideally, the two shouldn’t clash.

For example, a rustic outdoor dining area probably won’t look so great with a sleek, modern home, even though it may function just fine. That’s not to say that you can’t have a different style outside, however. In fact, it can be a lot of fun to design and use a space that’s different than your everyday indoor dining experience. Just be careful that the contrast between the two isn’t too great.

Outdoor kitchen appliances

Are kitchens outdoors comprised only of barbeque grills and picnic tables? Not by a long shot! Sure, those are options, but today’s outdoor appliances have come a long way compared to what was available in the past.

Do you have a convection oven or stove inside? Now, the same is available in your outdoor kitchen! Or, shake it up a little and choose a wood-burning stove or masonry fireplace for outdoor cooking. Also available are a wide variety of stainless steel appliances including ice makers, refrigerators, cooktops, and sinks. You name it … if it can be found in an indoor kitchen, you can also find the equivalent for your outdoor cooking space.

All this boils down to you being able to have everything you need in one place. That means spending more time with your guests and not having to make endless trips back and forth to the house.

To cover or not to cover

Outdoor kitchen remodeling

Eating outside can be invigorating and the fresh air might even whet your appetite. But, what happens if the weather turns or if eating in the sun is simply too hot?

Outdoor kitchens can be fully covered, left uncovered, or have a combination of both. Before you choose, consider when and how you’ll be entertaining guests or dining with your family. For example, if you plan to only eat outside when it’s too hot to heat up the inside with cooking, you’ll want to make sure you at least have some covered area outside. This can often be solved with an umbrella over a patio table, or a shaded area for eating.

DIY outdoor kitchens vs. custom made by professionals

Planning an outdoor kitchen can be very exciting. And, do-it-yourselfers may be tempted to do the project themselves. It may not be in your best interest, however, unless you’re a professional contractor yourself.

Why? Let’s take a quick look at some of the things you’ll encounter when planning and installing an outdoor kitchen:

  • Design considerations (making the space complement your existing home)
  • Local permits (if required)
  • Plumbing needs (sinks, dishwashers)
  • Electrical requirements (for appliances or outdoor lighting)
  • Masonry work (stone walls, patios, outdoor fireplaces, etc.)
  • Gas hookups (for kitchen appliances)
  • Carpentry (pergolas, cabinets, etc.)

10 Tips For Creating the Perfect Home Office

10 Tips For Creating the Perfect Home Office

These days, working from home is more commonplace than ever. Some people were fortunate to already have a home office set up before the arrival of the coronavirus and shelter in place restrictions. Others are finding themselves in a new world, navigating the challenges of working remotely without the perfect office space.

Whether you’re new to the work from home realm, or a seasoned pro, it’s important to consider the space in which you work. Even if you only work from home in a part-time capacity, having the right space organized and laid out properly can have a serious impact on your mood, effectiveness, and productivity.

Let’s take a look at some things to consider when choosing or designing your home office.

1.  Home office location

Think of this as choosing prime real estate. Location matters and the type of work you do helps determine which location is best. If you spend your remote work time doing conference calls and video meetings, you’ll want a space that’s removed from the rest of the household commotion or potential distractions. On the other hand, if your work from home involves meeting with clients, an office on the first floor near an entrance works best.

2.  Style and function

Home Office Design

Even though it’s meant for work, your home office doesn’t have to be mismatched with the rest of your house. If your style is country living, for example, a stark modern office will feel out of place. Instead, choose colors, furniture, and accessories that complement the other rooms in your home and still provide the function you want and need.

3.  Comfortable and purposeful furniture

Whether you spend two hours a day in your home office or eight, having comfortable and ergonomically friendly furniture will improve your mood and productivity.

4.  Thoughtful colors

The color scheme of your home office should add to, not detract from, your mood and the type of work you do. For example, if you’re a creative writer, softer, more relaxing colors may work better for keeping your creative juices flowing. On the other hand, if your work is high energy, brighter, more vibrant colors can help keep you energized throughout the day.

5.  Find the right view

You may not have a home that looks out over the beach or a mountain vista, but find a room or space that does have a view that inspires you. This will make your office more enjoyable to work in. If you simply don’t have a view, or the room with the view isn’t available for your office, create your own with wall décor.

6.  Accessorize to match your personality

The great thing about a home office is that it’s your You don’t have a company or your boss dictating how it should look. Use this to your advantage by choosing accessories, furniture, and colors that define and complement your personal style.

7.  Choose your organization wisely

Home Office Design

A well-organized home office will not only look more professional for those video meetings you have, it will also improve your productivity. Get creative with organization strategies – these can include vertical and horizontal storage, shelves, built-ins, cabinets, etc.

8.  Technology tips

The right technology can make or break your work from home experience. Choose your phone, computer, printer, and other technology carefully based on what you want and need to get the job done. Then, arrange it in a way that promotes easy workflow. Finally, keep it all neat by hiding or organizing unsightly cords.

9.  Lots of light

A bright, cheery office will keep you inspired and reduce eye strain and the chance for headaches. If natural light from a window isn’t available in your space, choose the right fixtures and bulbs to provide the light you need.

10.  Inspiration

Working for hours in any office can be tiresome. What will keep you inspired and cause you to put in the hours you need? Maybe it’s photographs of your family, or a favorite painting on the wall. You get to choose and even change it out from time to time.

Change Your View: Have Fun and Design Your Remodel Now, Build When Ready

Change Your View: Have Fun and Design Your Remodel Now, Build When Ready

While the world is sheltering in place and reducing the spread of the newfound virus threat, we want to have some fun.  You heard us, some actual fun designing your home remodel.  We work with bright colors, different textures, products, and appliances every day – the things you daydream about shopping for in your newly designed space.

matte black backsplash with white countertop in kitchen    Stunning backsplash tile in kitchen remodel.

This time we’ve been given to work from home is providing you the reminders of why you wanted to remodel in the first place.  You’re probably noticing you don’t have the space you want for your laptop.  You may even be frustrated sharing spaces that are not laid out to your functional needs.  Some of these remodeling needs are simpler than you may think with the proper space planning expert.

This is the perfect time to start having some fun and designing your space together.  The design process can be done in 1 of 3 ways pending your comfort level.

  1. Design Showroom Take Over: Schedule a private meeting with one of our talented designers
  2. Schedule a virtual consultation via video chat – don’t worry, we’ll handle technology!
  3. Set an in-home appointment with on of our designers.

Once you schedule your design appointment, the fun begins!  You’ll start to put together your inspiration binder.  We recommend you look at portfolios on our site, pull out magazines and grab the imagery that strikes you and keep these all in one binder.  This will start to show a pattern of the design style, colors, and features you like.

During your design appointment, your designer will ask you how you use this space now and how would you like to use this space.  In each major home space, there are functional challenges and our designers are experts at redefining spaces to meet your needs. We’ve redesigned thousands of spaces and have just about seen every dysfunctional space imaginable.

During this same meeting, you will share your design inspirations, floor plan (whether blueprint or sketch – no need to be an artist, rough lines with eraser marks are fine), and any functional must-haves.  You may have a pot filler as a must-have or an island or a free-standing tub in your master suite.  The designer gathers all this information so they may price it out for you and get you on the right path to measure twice, cut once budget management.  Sea Pointe prides ourselves on not going over budget, so managing your dreams up front to your wallet is a priority for us.

Once your designer has collected all the information necessary, they will move on to your design agreement showing all of your requested items and your basic floor plan. This is when you will meet next and start planning your materials selection. Again, the same 3 meeting options may be done.  Our goal is to select all the materials you want so we may create a 3D rending of your complete bathroom.  This enables you to change tile, placements, etc. while everything is still on paper and no money has been spent on your design selections.  Talk about a smart way to design.  Have you ever had half a wall painted and thought, oh $%#@!  We remove the “Oh $%#@!” moments from remodeling.

Getting Ready for Your 2020 Remodel

Getting Ready for Your 2020 Remodel

Getting Ready for Your 2020 Remodel

Are you thinking about doing a home remodel, but do not know how to prepare yourself? There are many steps you can take to prepare yourself, because the remodeling process is not always as straightforward as you think and can become very overwhelming.  As a Design Build Firm, we put a lot of effort into making all of the“low”points of remodeling as smooth as possible for our clients. Whether you are doing a whole home remodel or just a kitchen or bathroom remodel, taking steps to become prepared is important. Here are suggestions on how to get ready for your 2020 remodel.

  1. Defining your remodeling goal:

Defining your remodeling goal is very important. There are many things to consider when defining your goal. Why do you want to remodel?  What are you willing to invest? Not only in terms of money but also in terms of time; do you have time right now to invest into a project?  As far as the money aspect, your budget is a very crucial part when considering a remodel. Setting a budget for your remodeling project goes hand and hand when creating a realistic wish list. Oftentimes people have an extensive wish list, without considering a realistic budget. It is very important to do research before defining your goal or making any major decisions.

  1. Interview a number of professionals:

In order to bring your remodeling dreams to life, interviewing numerous remodeling companies is very important. While interviewing each company, it is important to keep remodeling company references and licenses in mind. It is very important that any contractor you work with is a home licensed contractor, as the contractor you choose can really make or break a successful project. When interviewing, you can also consider whether you want to work with a contractor or a design build firm. Many people choose home contractors because they are often times cheaper than a design build firm. Although, people do not realize that there is very little design and budget guidance when working with a contractor compared to working with a design build firm that is very clear and concise on budget, design, and timing. Depending on the type of project you are looking to do, there are companies that specialize in certain areas. There are kitchen design experts as well as bathroom design experts, so choosing the right company to do your project is very important.

  1. Knowing the highs and lows of remodeling:

Many people are not aware of the lows and highs of remodeling.  Although the high points are great, often times you have to prepare yourself for the low points. Our Sea Pointe Design & Remodel home remodelers believe that drywall sanding is the lowest point during a remodel. Design is always the first and highest point of the process, because you are envisioning your dream space without taking construction into consideration.  Although there are many highs and lows of the remodeling process, our team of trusted kitchen and bathroom remodeling professionals put great effort into our clients to make the process as smooth as possible.

  1. Know your end goal:

It is important to ask yourself questions about what your end goal is. Are you planning this remodel because you are selling your home or because you plan to stay in the same house for years to come? This is something to consider if you are planning to resell your home, more times than not, people do not always choose to go as deep into the project unless they are planning to stay.  You may choose lower end finishes if you plan on reselling or even renting the home out rather than staying in the home.

There are certain steps that one can take when planning a remodel if the plan is to sell in the end. There are certain points in a house that can help the resell value of the home. Are you looking to put an addition on your home because you are looking to grow your family? Are you looking to convert a wasted room into a more used room? These are all things you have to consider when determining your end goal and something that a remodeling firm can help answer your questions prior to committing to a contract.

  1. Prepare for the unexpected:

When planning a remodel you always have to prepare for the unexpected. Unfortunately, from time to time homeowners run into unexpected problems even outside of the project. It is important to prepare for this, so that it does not totally catch you off guard or make you go way over budget. It is important to put extra money in your budget in the event you run into expected problems that may need to be fixed along the way. It is also important to keep in mind that not all home designs work as easy as you think. It is easy to get carried away when envisioning what you want, but it is very important to stay realistic with your home design because not everything is possible within a remodel based on your existing space.

Preparing yourself for the remodel will take a lot of unexpected elements out of the project, including knowing that there may be unexpected findings when you open up the walls. Reminding yourself that this will be a big project and preparing for the big disrupt of having strangers in your home also sets expectations that will prevent frustrations. The end product is always worth it when you select the right remodeling partner, but getting there without panic and anxiety is also something we aim to accomplish.
